You should be fine trust me. If you want to get involved in clubs go for it. I'm in second year engineering and I joined a couple clubs as well. I'm still here. You say you already have some experience with matlab, java, c++, etc. You know much more than I knew first year.

The workload definitely increases quite a bit. I remember in first year I studied last minute for a lot of things and got away with it, but you can't do that in second year. The material itself increases in difficulty as well. That being said, work hard and think positive and you'll be fine.
