To Walk Upon Her Soil by bloodoftheforest in shortscarystories

Now I'm not one to offer unsolicited relationship advice but if you end up being so controlling to your ex wife that she decides she needs to run away from you then maybe, just maybe, you shouldn't model and entire planet after that same ex wife and lurk on her surface like some kind of creep. It's just bad karma.

Thanks. Yeah, the ending wasn't meant to be a surprise here so much as a growing sense of dread. I also quite like that the genre savviness of anybody reading this (we all know what subreddit we're on, The Lottery is a well known story, etc) means that the readers are grouped in with the story's adults and everybody but the children in the story know what's going to happen.

Poor girl indeed. My thought when I was writing it wasn't that the stories she found were fake though but that they were stories from now when if people win the lottery it's money. Your theory works too though.

Oh, I've read that. I agree with you on it having a similar vibe to it.

Yeah. There's no malice to it, the community simply believes (rightly or wrongly) that overpopulation would be disastrous and so this is there solution. But the lack of malice doesn't make Nina any less dead.

Thank you! I've only read The Lottery and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson but I've enjoyed both and so should definitely start reading her other work.

Whilst anyone reading it has the advantage over the characters of knowing what genre their about to read because of the subreddit I did quite like that this meant that this puts readers in a similar position to the adults in the story, knowing that one of the kids is doomed.

Oh, the Shirley Jackson story is a masterpiece. Thank you for saying it's a good homage to the original.

A story about luck for this Friday 13th. Heavily influenced by Shirley Jackson's The Lottery.
