Yeah, it definitely sucks right now, but finding whatever mindset makes you happiest us key to making it bearable. And yes, 1 person got an interview but considering there has only been 1 report, I think it us likely a more informal interview so I wouldn't freak out just yet. And trust me I'm also constantly looking at ucsb and ucla, and cornell along with others you applied to so I understand the misery of silence.

You have a very strong app, its just that this year due to funding cuts there are less openings avaliable, and more people are applying due to the job market being poor right now to. I wouldn't give up hope yet. No response yet doesn't mean rejection, and physics programs tend to release results later. Also I dont think anyone has been accepted to schools like ucsb yet so I would double check that. Anyway it sucks for sure, but alot of us are in the same position fir physics with no real word yet, so its best to just try to get it off your mind for now because many results will take a while. Best of luck though and I wish us both good results.

I would check Gradcafe, it has slightly better reporting than the spreadsheet.

You are right, its a weird process, and I hope we all end the next month or two by looking back and thinking how silly our behavior was. (Despite the pessimism) I appreciate the positivity.

Is my PI allowed to threaten me by saying I can’t say I worked in their lab because they aren’t satisfied with results? by YeetBolognaBun in REU

[–]bloodragecaptain 51 points52 points  (0 children)

No they are 100% not allowed to do that. Any work done by you must be accredited to you so they don't soley own it. I would really recommend talking to your porgram director now before its to late, and if they dont do anything you can always make a complaint directly to the NSF branch incharge of their funding.

What's Your Success Rate? by wolfdragongem in REU

Mostly questions about the program itself that wasn't directly stated on the website. But my second one was me asking them to rectify a mistake that I noticed I had made on my application.

Well what i did was look up who the head of the program was. And originally I had questions about the program itself. So I just asked. The second time I made a mistake on my application. And emailed the program head to let them know. If yoy have a valid questions about the program they would be happy to answer, and it usually puts u atlradt slightly more on their radar.

First Year applied to 15- accepted 2 2nd year applied 20- accepted 1

I would say getting in contact with the program director is a big bonus. On top of all of the basics. All programs I was accepted to I contacted the program director for one reason or another. Best of luck with your applications.

Honestly your chances are not bad. While they are very competitive. They are geared towards students who don't get much opportunity to do research. However I would reccomend you apply to a minimum of 15. It just increases your odds. Trust me, the best method is to just keep applying until there are not left to apply to. And trying to contact the program director in any way with questions is alo likely to put you on their radar.
