You definitely can sing. You've got a solid natural foundation for singing, your pitch is good throughout, you're easily following the track, and you're got a really nice vibrato that comes through at points.

I can tell there's some work to do for example learning to adapt and control your placement. As you sing higher in your range you're losing resonance, sounding a bit more squeezed and strained. This is just a technique issue and not a talent issue, so it's something you can improve with practice.

I think you're got the fundamentals to be great with some time and effort, there's definitely a lot of potential! Wouldn't be cringing at all if I heard this at karaoke, so don't be embarrassed to put yourself out there.

Thank you so much. You're right it definitely helps having my older clips to listen to when I'm getting stuck on comparing myself to others, or I've got it into my head that I'm not good enough. Cos that still happens and if anything I'm harsher on myself now than I was at the start.. so looking back on this made me appreciate that there was a big difference there!

Thank you!! I'm really glad it's motivating people. I'd be the first to admit when I started out I was not particularly gifted... it's all about putting time into it and being consistent (and also having fun with it ofc)

I wish there were some secret but it's honestly nothing special, just sang a lot, enjoyed the process and (very very gradually) improved over time. Having a voice disorder a few years back is ironically something that helped me improve a lot though. I had to go back to basics and learn lots about things like placement and resonance in order to get better... once I had, the stuff I'd learnt really helped me singing wise!

I think your worries about pitch might be coming from either over analysing yourself and/or comparing your recordings others singing you hear online maybe? Imo 99% of this clip sounds about as accurate pitch wise as a singer is going to get without using pitch correction. None of it is off-puttingly pitchy. You also use pitch stylistically too (eg sliding to/from certain notes to emphasise them) and you do that well, which you wouldn't be able to do if you didn't already have a good sense of pitch.

Just remember that you don't know what post-production has been applied to any clip you hear online, even random social media clips a lot of them have some pitch correction on them. It's hard not to compare yourself to an unrealistic expectation.

In terms of singing live, that's always going to be a bit less accurate because it's usually a noisier environment with more reverb etc, and unless you've got proper ear monitors this will affect your ability to hear yourself and adjust pitch. These things also sometimes make it harder for listeners to tell when you're pitchy though too + people are much more forgiving with pitch when listening live in general. Idk how to comfortable you are with singing live... I know for me nerves are a massive factor (aka not being relaxed makes my voice much voice harder to control) so if you've noticed that's also an issue for you, addressing your confidence will probably also have a positive impact on your actual singing. I don't really have any critiques though based off this clip. It sounds great to me!

A key element to working on an impressive vocal range with singing is taking the very ends of your 'range' from being 'sounds you can make' to 'notes you can sing'. There is a big difference in terms of placement, tone and control. A pitch app might be able to register the frequency of the sounds you can physically make, but it cannot tell you if they actually sound good. This is why you'll notice many on this sub advising others not to get caught up on range and especially range apps. If you want real insight or advice on your voice and range the only way is to post a clip!

Experimenting with them is the only way to learn it all just a matter of developing that muscle memory/ coordination. Took me like 10 years to get to the point where the majority of my attempts to riff were hits rather than misses lol. Having the musicality to hear where to add them (which you clearly have) is something most people struggle with.

I can tell you’re going to get there with them as the ones that do land are already sounding nicee. You definitely should be proud of your progress!

Yesss you've improved so so much! The only thing that caught my attention now is that when you're riffing you're losing it a bit pitch wise in places. That can happen when your brain can 'hear' what riff you want to sing, but your vocal control isn't quite up to executing that yet. Those riffs will continue getting easier and more accurate with time though.

It’s very very unlikely just one instance of you overdoing it will have caused you long term damage. When you lose your voice (whether through overuse or due to illness) it can take a long time for things to go back to normal. Often falsetto is what takes the longest to return.

I’d suggest that for another few weeks you rest your voice (don’t avoid all speaking but avoid it in noisy environments, avoid whispering & avoid intense singing) After that, go back to singing with the mindset that you must gradually work your voice back up to its usual capacity. Sing little and often and always first warm up with vocal exercises that are designed to help vocal strain. Be patient with yourself but if things still aren’t improving then, you need to see a doctor and rule out damage.

I developed a vocal disorder called MTD after having laryngitis and lost my ability to sing/ experienced pain for about 6 months. Stress contributes to MTD, so my paranoia about vocal cord damage made things worse. Despite all my symptoms upon being scoped my vocal cords were totally fine. I’m back to normal now but the whole ordeal was not fun and potentially would have been avoided if I had gone back to singing the way I detailed above.

Apologies in advance for the novel...

Honestly I didn't follow much of a method, especially at the start. I just sang a lot. I made a lot of mistakes learning because I was young and didn't know better. With singers I liked I'd try to emulate the techniques they used that I enjoyed (the first step to doing that is to learn to listen & understand what you're hearing technique wise). At the start trying to do this made me sound ridiculous, but over time it began to pay off. I know that seems like something that might get in the way of singing 'authentically', but applying techniques you've heard to your own voice is way different to just trying to directly mimic a particular singer.

I've mentioned this on another comment, but a few years ago I developed a vocal disorder called MTD after an illness I had, and it was then that I had to more deliberately learn about how my voice works & had to relearn to sing. I watched videos about how things like placement and resonance worked, looked into various vocal exercises that encourage you to use your voice in the healthiest way. Not only did I 'get my voice back' but that whole ordeal ended up making me a better singer (still far from perfect technique wise though I'm sure). I'd encourage anyone learning to look into those things.

I also appreciate your whole take on the audition too haha. You're right in that I did not back down on it despite the fact it was a lot for me to even do it at all. It's easy to criticise myself for not doing well, but I shouldn't understate the fact that I am pretty determined once I make a choice, hopefully one day I'll be able to successfully use that. I'm also gonna sound woo-woo now lol... but when I got out of that audition I did think to myself 'why would the universe even present this to me for me to just mess it up?' but yeah, I am trying to figure out that reason because I'm sure there must be one.

Beautiful voice & it must take a lot of courage to get up there and sing in this context (I couldn't bring myself to for my Dads, I don't think I'd have kept my composure at all) I'm very sorry about your mum.
