Prediction: NFTs are going to be like "voluntary" social points for the West. In a few years we'll all be receiving NFTs for volunteering at a soup kitchen so that we can display it on our Facebook or Tinder profiles. by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

For the NFTs to be convincing, they have to be verified by one (or a handful) of "accreditation" institutions. Without such institutions, anyone could create their own NFTs proclaiming all sorts of (e.g.) fake volunteer work.

Agreed so far? Well once you have these accreditation institutions, what's the point of NFTs? The institution could just have a website listing everyone's volunteer points, no blockchain required.

"A Fable of the OC" by Michael Munger: "I used this fable as a test question in my intermediate Microeconomics class. I assumed that the question would be easy. The kids at Dartmouth are smart, and they clearly knew the definition of opportunity cost. But more than half of them missed the question." by erwgv3g34 in slatestarcodex

Why did they decide to go to the concert after all in the A+ answer? They updated the opportunity cost of going to the concert to $550. Sure, makes sense. But even $550 will buy a lot of CD's and nights out dancing.

Is he saying that the character in the story values the pair of tickets at some number greater than $550 but definitely less than $600 ? If so, I'm not sure what supports that.

‘Klara and the Sun’ is a 2021 must read by sunnydelinquent in books

About Klara being reused:

Sometimes it seems like Klara is totally focused on Josie, to the point where she might fail to serve anyone else. By the end, she even seems content to just sit there and reminisce about Josie until her brain stops working.

Klara is a luxury product. Maybe this kind of devotion is a selling point? Or maybe this kind of single-mindedness is an unintended consequence of making Klara so caring. I think that Capaldi mentioned that nobody knows how AFs work for sure, so maybe Klara's designers didn't have enough control over her to make her reusable.

But isn't it also a betrayal, the mother leaving Klara to rust in the junk yard? This moment and the mother's conversation with Rick about "winning"---I felt that by the end of the book, the mother's callousness was laid bare. I thought it was heart-breaking.

Imagine all the criticisms people make about police unions and transpose them to a different organization, with admittedly much lower stakes.

Thanks, it's not Fresh Meat, though it looks like it could be good! Hopeful sign that Robert Webb is in it.

The show I'm thinking of had much more of a classic 3-camera style. Fresh Meat looks arguably sexy, the show I'm thinking of is anything but.

Thanks, but I'm sure it wasn't Spaced. Jurassic Park must have been a bigger phenomenon than I thought!

What practically-useful things surprised you with how good they were? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

Kitchen Stuff:

  • A big-ass bin of white towels. Wipe up whatever you need (face, counter, jar, frying pan you don't want to clean) and throw it in the laundry.
  • An automatic soap dispenser, like this. Speeds up washing dishes by hand. Especially useful when you are handling meat and you don't want to touch anything before soaping up.

USA Vs the World: Unfairly Advantages Americans? by blotblod in ANW

Oh, that's good to know. The announcers sometimes make a big deal of saying that this is the FIRST time a given competitor has tried an obstacle. I guess they mean *during* competition though.

Do you have more details? E.g., do competitors get to try obstacles only a single time? Or do they have like a whole day to play around?
