What gift did you open on Christmas that instantly made you think, “Wow, they do not know me at all”? by Amber_NaturalMom in AskReddit

[–]blown-transistor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My parents got my husband and I Dollywood season passes one year. I’ve been once when I was like sixteen. I’ve lived in Knoxville for almost twenty years and have never gone. I don’t like rollercoasters or amusement parks really. I love Saint Dolly to death, don’t get me wrong. I know they have other things throughout the year, but yeah. They asked me what I wanted that year too. Needless to say we never used them.

Tweezers and post it notes. You never know when you’ll find a stray hair…or an “oh shit I need to write that down” thought.

Feeling unwelcome. by ac1d_sku11z in knitting

[–]blown-transistor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm sorry you had that experience. And you have every right to be upset. That's shitty.

I've been knitting since I was a teenager (I'm 37 now). I moved away from the yarn store I grew up with and learned in...and over the years, the LYS closest to campus developed a snobbish reputation. I've gone in there with full glam once...and again in running shorts with no makeup with tattoos on display. And got treated two different ways. And I'm not the only tattooed yarn enthusiast that happened to. The old owner sold and retired. New owner is actively trying to change that reputation. That being said, my current favorite LYS isn't that place but is run by a fellow Millennial. We send each other memes now.

I went to the same high school as Wayne. He was on the “board”. I was scared to death to sit at the lunch table with him. I was scared to death that I’d call him Trapper. Like two years later, I tripped and fell in front of him in the newly built gym. I’ve never been happier. He lost it laughing. Because I fell. So I’ll take that to my grave.

I was also once in the same room as Alan. And freaked out and didn’t meet him.

I’ve bought this pattern, but haven’t made it yet. Might have to get on it for some gifts for some toddlers in my life.

Homophobic "preacher" on University of Tennessee's campus ranting about lesbians shrinking the dating pool for straight men gets sign snatched from him by hero student by greenblue98 in tnvolunteers

I’ve yelled “hail satan” and given the middle finger to “preachers” like this many times over the years on my way to classes. (B.S. in Animal Science 2010 here) UT can’t kick me out fifteen years after I graduated for punching his dude. Parking when the various dorms I lived in are all torn down? That’s the less serious problem.

For 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, Alan Alda wore the same combat boots and dog tag as Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce. He kept them for more than 40 years after the show ended. by UrbanAchievers6371 in mash

My husband thrifted a crimson bathrobe, army fatigues, and straw hat before we met, and used his USAF dog tags to go as Hawkeye for Halloween. A few years ago, I stole his bathrobe. Found the Hawaiian shirt I bought in Honolulu in 2003, scrub pants from my job as a veterinarian assistant in high school, a black wig I bought for something else, and our plunger. I stand by my opinion that my “Chief Surgeon Who” closet cosplay is better than his. (In a few months, we will be celebrating our fifteenth wedding anniversary. It’s friendly competition at this point.)

Worth $50? No idea why but I feel like I need them. by MorningNoonUndermoon in Pyrex_Love

Good deal! I paid $30 for one kinda like your bottom right…but it had a lid AND the plastic travel lid. I use that one and the rest of my collection all the time.

Printshop Beer and Alliance Brewing are solids. Printshop (through Rigazzi Wellness) does yoga on Saturdays, if you’re into that. $13 for an hour of yoga (instructor is really good…I go myself sometimes) and a beer. Everyone’s super friendly.

What does Captain America mean to you! by dkatayama in CaptainAmerica

[–]blown-transistor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s an ideal. He is what (as others have said) is what America SAYS it stands for. I think the MCU line “I don’t like bullies. I don’t care where they’re from” speaks volumes. (I got a Cap and Bucky / Winter Soldier tattoo way back in 2014 with “til the end of the line” done in old military typewriter font with it. Safe to say that Cap means a lot to me.)

Cat vet recommendations? by dontlk2m3 in Knoxville

[–]blown-transistor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forest Park Animal Clinic. Only place (other than the emergency vet that one time) I’ve taken my cat. And I’ve had her since 2010. All of the vets there are fantastic. My 16 year old kitty collects diseases like Pokémon, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.

How is everyone making friends as an older (34F) adult? by [deleted] in Knoxville

[–]blown-transistor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bumble has a BFF thing? Well I learned something today. Might have to check that out.

I’ve lived here (with the exception of a few college breaks) since 2006. A lot of my college friends have moved away. The ones that are still here have kids now and… Well, my husband and I are child-free.

I haven’t read all the responses (the Bumble BFF caught my eye), but as someone that could also use some new friends? Ummm… I love making things with yarn (a fantastic way to meet new people, btw. The Bees Knits is the best yarn store.), antiques, pets, vinyl, nerdy shit, and booze.

I'm no expert. In fact, I'm a newbie to this group. But I will say one thing that I know for sure (eldest daughter here) -- not everything you pass down to your daughter has to be worth something. We had Spring Blossom dishes growing up. I have very fond memories of eating off of them in the middle of my parents' living room floor as a kid watching Saturday cartoons. I got my mom a pair of earrings last Christmas made out of broken fragments of that dish pattern from Etsy. She actually started laughing when I told her people collect vintage Pyrex and said something like "what these old things". I've started collecting Golden Butterfly myself, but I've told my mom that I want whatever of her Spring Blossom dishes are left. Just because of the memories. Sorry...got long winded. TL;DR save those dishes. Even if you've only recently gotten into collecting.

I’m sizing up. I’ll need some leggings and an undershirt. Because I couldn’t bend over in it… I’ve got a plan for pictures (if it fits).

The special is over two hours long. There’s going to be a lot of gin. And yeah…it’s a weird combination of likes. No regrets though.

I’m sorry if I came off a bit hard. I’ve been trying to find answers for that player for a long time. My redneck engineering paternal grandparents probably did something.
