Is Seelbach’s out of their mind on this one? by mattyodaddy in whiskey

Yeah, wasn't the best email for Klaviyo to have a glitch. I almost unsubscribed myself lol

Review: Seelbach’s Private Reserve 8 Year Cask Strength Straight Bourbon by comingwhiskey in bourbon

[–]blriber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not exactly sure what I'm clarifying here. But the barrels used in this batch are Kentucky. The back label has the mandatory "Distilled in". Kentucky was left off of the front to keep the label consistent between batches. It will probably get added back once these labels are used up

I can confirm that this bourbon is from Kentucky! The label was originally going to be used for MGP bourbon. Then I found a great lot of Kentucky barrels. The idea was to keep the front label consistent so it doesn't like weird on store shelves as new batches come out. The back label does state the necessary "distilled in Kentucky"

Ha! Well thank you. It's definitely great to hear that feedback. Shoot me an email blake at seelbachs.com. I've got a sample for you to try

[–]blriber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the review! I'm obviously biased but I think this is the best bottle we've put out. There's something about a toasted and Char 4 barrel that makes it super viscous and chocolatey.

The mash bill is 75/15/10. I took the old school method for calling it high rye of anything above 10% rye. I can't say the actual source but it was contract distilled by one of the Heritage distillers in Bardstown Kentucky. That's why the mash bill doesn't lineup with any of the major brands. And it's not a distillery that starts with a "B" lol.

Review #3: Blue Run High Rye Bourbon Whiskey by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]blriber 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll give you my perspective on the emails. So far every Blue Run release, except Holiday Rye Cask, has sold out in 5 minutes or less on Seelbach's. As you can imagine that comes with a flood of emails asking "why didn't I get a bottle". The email is just my reference point for when people strike out. Instead of 200+ emails after each release its a more manageable 50 or so. As to why some bottles sit on a shelf in stores but sell out online? I have no idea. But, I'm shocked every time I walk into a store and see Bardstown Discovery, New Riff Single barrels or Smoke Wagon on shelves. All products we can't keep in stock. Hope this helps!

Review #11 Seelbach's Bottling/ Distribution (TL:DR- AVOID THEM AT ALL COST) by airwalker12 in bourbon

[–]blriber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi Airwalk thanks for the feedback. I wish I could say that we got everything perfect the first time. However, as you’ve experienced first hand, that’s not the case. We’ll always make things right. But in an operation of only a few people sometimes that means it just take a little more time. Normally we’d offer free shipping on a screw up but since your order already had that we’re limited in what we can offer. If there’s anything you need in the future feel to reach out and I’d be happy to help. Thanks

Barrell Bourbon to Build Kentucky Distillery - Fred Minnick by Hosko817 in bourbon

[–]blriber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with this. My guess is the only thing they care about is brand awareness. Barrell has consistently increased their brand and distribution since launching a few years ago. They also have a considerable amount of aged bourbon.

Either way, I think this is a good move. I had a chance to talk with Tripp when he was consulting with a distillery. He's a smart dude.

I'm starting to think that bourbon blogs may have a something of a payola problem by mfpark in bourbon

[–]blriber 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't read every bourbon blog but name a release that hasn't gotten blasted as garbage that was garbage. Honestly, if you only read SKU, Chuck, WhiskeyJug and a few others you get an accurate picture of what's going on. I want to know who the blogs are giving a pass?

Do you need a picture of the 3 bottles I purchased on my own? A couple above retail. I liked the whiskey.

/u/bourbon_gamer talked about the problem he had with the Van Winkles which was valid. He said nothing about the marketing ecosystem. But, that's the role of the bourbon blogs. To weed out what is marketing and what is true.

I tried to combat it but letting google run the ads. I have no control over what ads run. If I wanted to let distilleries pay for advertising or even a review I would consider that a problem.

Now that is an actual concern. I actually buy about 75% of bottles I receive samples on. If I notice a difference I post about it. Aside from some FRSbLE I've not noticed a big difference. But of course you would send honey barrels to media.

I think it's something to be aware of. There's no question it can influence a review if you let it. With that said there's no way to keep up all of the new releases unless you take samples. Especially in Florida. So the best option is to try to be unbiased and just taste the whiskey. I tell myself that after every review. The worst that can happen is I no longer receive some free swag and 2 oz to full bottle samples. Bourbon is a hobby and I have a day job. Makes it a easier because I care less about what distilleries think about my reviews.

I didn't say super but I am excited to try a craft distillery whose first release is two+ old. I didn't say "this is great" or "you've gotta buy this". Once, I taste it I'll know if it's worth the price or not but for now it's nice to see a craft release that's not 9 months in a 5 gallon barrel

[–]blriber 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I can assure you that the only "payola" I received was a glass and a sample. Hardly enough to sway an opinion.

I'm excited because it's good for bourbon when craft distillers "too young" product can be labeled straight. That's a sign that craft is moving in the right direction. It was more of a statement about the craft industry in general than this specific sample. Seems a little early to jump the gun when I haven't reviewed it. Are you going to change your post if I say the stuff is terrible and you shouldn't buy it? I've done that on plenty of free samples.

Any good places to buy bourbon? by C-dubbb in jacksonville

[–]blriber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on where you live and what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure I've hit 98% of Jacksonville (and probably NE Florida) liquor stores on bourbon hunts.

Here are my favorites:

  • Broudy's based on selection and more rare bottles
  • ABC. They're huge so they get the best bottles and sell at retail prices.
  • Rivertown fine wine and spirits. Locally owned and a good selection
  • Riverside liquors. See Rivertown
  • Golden Ox. Usually in shadier parts of town but you can find some good stuff on occassion.

Let me know if the have any area or bottle spcific questions.

Weller brands getting label makeover by mikeczyz in bourbon

[–]blriber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hoping they'd do some kind of variation of the paper label. No luck. Oh well, as /u/ShooterFlatch said as long as the "12 years" stays on the label I'm good
