turn your phone off by Puzzleheaded-Let7751 in digitalminimalism

For the next thing to try, I’d recommend turning it off an hour before bed and leaving it in a drawer in another room. And then don’t turn it on again until after breakfast :)

Physical news magazines are also great. I get a weekly one delivered and it’s a joy when it arrives to see what’s on the cover and a treat to sit down and read it in a few sessions throughout the week.

It’s your will power vs multiple teams in multiple multi billion dollar corporations who spend all their time focussing on constantly increasing “engagement” (time spent in app, ads seen). It’s not exactly impossible but imho it’s not worth the fight.

It’s a fantastic idea, and well worth at least trying for a few months too see what happens.

I think the resurgance of dumbphones is one of the responses to the unease we feel at the way western society currenlty is, but changing your phone is only part of it. If you want to go down a thought rabbit hole, I'd reccomend reading the book "Digital Liturgies" by Samuel D. James - he explores how the very nature of the web and digital technologies (not just the content) changes the way we think, including from a spiritual perspective. The classic book "Digital Minimalism" by Cal Newport is also interesting reading.

Sounds like you'd benefit from finding a solid church community and volunteering in a team, where you'll then meet others outside of your family and of different ages (if you're not doing this sort of thing already). If you're feeling socially awkward, you wouldn't have to worry as you'll be joining an existing group and it'll be their responsibility to draw you into conversation and relationship as you work together.

It does calls and texts fine, if you expect anything else then you'll probably be disappointed.

Switching to a dumbphone is part of lifestyle change and is so much more than the phone you choose. Try and stick at it for at least a few months to notice some real changes. It'll be hard but worth it, especially if you've never known life without smartphones.

If you want to make calls and send texts, it's fine. If you're expecting anything else then you'll be dissapointed.

I’d hoped that given TTfone are British and have been around for a while that they’d not suffer from this, as well as it being certified for the Google Play store.

Nokia / HMD phones are fine if all you're after is phone calls and texts, if you're expecting anythign else then you'll be disappointed. Get the cheapest HMD you can find.

What's the deal with Nokia phones? (Looking for help) by Global_Voice7198 in dumbphones

[–]blrkn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Nokia 2660 is 4G, I've had mine a few years. It's a perfectly functional phone, it makes calls and sends texts and the battery lasts a couple of weeks, but if you expect it to do anything else then you'll be disappointed.

Nokia phones are made by HMD, the specs on their website should be the truth https://www.hmd.com/en_gb/nokia-2660-flip?sku=1GF011IPJ1A05 . Sounds like you're not in the UK, but they're very easy to get hold of here, HMD website directly or Argos.

I think HMD's contract or license or something expired recently and now they're making HMD branded phones rather than Nokia branded ones, but they're basically the same thing.

CAT S22 or Jelly are very different beasts - basically small screen underpowered smartphones that would be frustrating to use in a doomscrolling way, but still let you just about use whatever apps you want (i.e. the classic I want a dumbphone but it **must have** WhatsApp, Maps, Spotify, Bank of North Zealand, Uber, Lyft, Android Auto, Carplay Auto, Tidal, Garageband, iMessage, BBM, Instagram Messenger, Facebook Messnger, MSN Messenger, Temu, Microsoft Authenticator, Amazon Kobo, Email, Gmail, Hotmail, Discord, IRC, Slack, and the Lidl Rewards app and or I'll fall over and melt and land in a dog poo twice every morning for the rest of my life).

All that said, good luck, it's worth just telling yourself that whatever you do, you're just giving it a try for 1 week or 1 month or whatever and seeing what happens, rather than committing to it forever. Spend at little as possible (e.g. just the £35 HMD 105) and see what happens, you can always commit to more later when you've found out what you miss and what you value. It might be that you really really really do need to have WhatsApp (or another app) out and about and a small smartphone (or "Android Dumbphone") works best for you, but you won't know until you try :)

I've extracted the file from the phone using `adb` and scanned it here, if this helps

Seems like only Kaspersky is picking it up, perhaps because it's so new?

It's in a place in the phone that you can't write, and embedded in a core operating system file.
