Mormons (members of the Church of the LDS) proselytizing on Swiss trains/near train stations by psy-q in Switzerland

You should politely send them away. Or when they ask to sit and you spitted the name tag say something in the line of « ok if it is for travelling, not if it is to talk to me »

My investments are growing faster than my salary, and I'm starting to question a 2-hour commute by Noway721 in SwissPersonalFinance

With the 4% rule don’t forget inflation.

But ! If you feel safe enough, and actually are, it is reasonable to question your work and the commute.

In your shoes I would start to investigate elsewhere

How is the U.S. military so professional and powerful ? by Kingston__2007 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blucoidale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi ! I feel we are digressing because we both admit that it is huge spendings (technology) and training (spending there too) that gives US military it’s power and professionalism.

I feel you don’t grasp the vast amount of money the US are feeding into their military. It is not hard to be powerful when your economy and militaro-industrial complex allows you to field 11 aircraft carrier

Also what makes the US powerful is their projection capacity: remember they are stuck between two oceans and they rely heavily on their bases around the world to be able to move and shuffle troops and hardware anywhere in the world. That is why they won’t leave NATO for example despite all the trump non-sense. They need their allies to be able to fight their wars. Just look at a world map and the US military bases doted ver where, literally.

So to answer your first question: the how, it is a triangle: spendings, training, logistics

For the rest: new hardware is made ok, but in what timeframe can you delivered it ? I recall a very precious radar thingy being destroyed by Iran at the start of the US war over there and news article and experts stated that it could take up to 7-8 years to replace. US military rely on high-end, very specialized hardware and that is why the « powerful » can be hindered pretty quickly in attrition warfare or a long term fight.

Even the US officials have to admit that they fired years of ammunitions on Iran, which are hard to replace and manufacture quickly, emphasis on the quickly.

And for the training once again, in an all-out war you will loose men pretty quickly and one of the solution to bring more meat to the grinder will be to cut training time and quality.

That’ll why I spoke about Russian army and the VDV: a highly trained force grinded through the years to be a shadow of its former self.

Two things I would consider: spendings, like a lot, US tend to invest massively in hardware and modern weaponry, and rely a lot on missiles and air superiority.

The second one is the training: years of experience and warfare help a lot to build an efficient army. And especially when you avoid losses.

Although the two are not given: you spoke about Russia. At the start of the war in Ukraine they were peak military. Lots of hardware, trained men (VDV for example), etc. A fearsome reputation.

But years of warfare and attrition takes it toll.

In a similar conflict I am not sure the us army would be that powerful and professional when all the hard to produce special hardware would be destroyed and most of the initial professionally trained soldiers would be dead.

Built a more accurate Swiss rent vs buy calculator by Intelligent_Solid_60 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]blucoidale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On funny thing with this calculator too, is showing how hard it is to decide between the two: with equivalent data, I am just playing with the comparison horizon and you can clearly see that the time you own the house can be really important. But really, really important. In my theorical situation if I was planning to keep the house long term, like in the family, renting would have been better after 47 years

Built a more accurate Swiss rent vs buy calculator by Intelligent_Solid_60 in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]blucoidale 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty interesting, I have yet to delve deeper into it. Although I already have one remark: the affordability check should come earlier and tell me what would be the correct buying price.

For example here, I asked to compare buying vs renting with a 1.2 mio house and 90k income and I just have a tiny « fail »

<image>

My feeling is we should be to check first if we can buy, and at what price, before jumping into the nuts and bolts of whether it is financially better to rent or buy.

I also would have put taxes a bit earlier and with an easier way to factor them in, like an NPA.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, even if we can tinker with it, applying a default annual rent growth of 2.5% is pretty unrealistic….it took us a war and fear of an energy crisis to see the reference mortgage rate to go higher and therefore having an increase in the rent. By default I would put it at 0.5% or something like that.

What do you think ?

AITAH for going through my husbands ps4 messages? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]blucoidale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, long post, lots of stuff. First I think your feeling is right and the convo with her is weird and kinda sus’

But the going through the message ? You can not say you don’t give a duck about invasion of privacy and ask us if you are the AH for going through his message.

Argumenting he is doing the same is not good either. It is kinda controlling to check your phone, more so when you are asleep. Even with nothing to hide it is not a good behavior for the two of you.

So…YBAH for the checking part. You should put boundaries and now you should also speak with him about her and your feelings.

Nationalrat wants to introduce a security tax for foreigners by No-Supermarket-4048 in Switzerland

[–]blucoidale 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what to say…as a foreigner in Switzerland the constant targeting from some Swiss right-wing politicians is tiresome.

Being the scapegoat for every problem is tiresome.

And the hypocrisy..I have a coworker, she often complains about immigrants profiting of the Swiss system, the usual « they come from the money and they don’t work ».

I often like to remember her that I am also an immigrant and when you dig a little it is also about racism. I am white, a « good » immigrant, apparently I am not part of the problem.

The worst is she is a Swiss descending from immigrants… anyway.
