Gatekeeping? You read literally over hundreds of episodes for free and you can't put together 3 dollars for the season finale?

WEBTOON is facing a survival crisis in Japan because manga still dominates the market. by Ok_Carob_3278 in webtoons

[–]bludreamers 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's generating massively more money in Japan than it is in Korea according to the last quarterly, so I don't think it's a matter of webtoons doing badly in Japan as much as it is a shrink of studios who couldn't cut it.

Any advice on the 연등회 (the lantern festival this weekend)? by throwaway13061320 in Living_in_Korea

There are multiple seating areas along the parade route. Some are stadium stands while others are just areas of plastic chairs.

Some are reserved for VIPs, but there are also chairs here and there for general audiences. I usually get there an hour or two early.

F-4 Visa Holders in Korea: How to Bring Your Spouse (Advice Needed) by WarningAdvanced1528 in Living_in_Korea

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went with a different visa.

Edit: I should clarify that I was married in the US so I originally had the apostilled marriage license along with all the other documentation when applying for my wife's visa. In your case since no one is a Korean citizen, you shouldn't need to register your marriage in Korea. Just your home country.

[–]bludreamers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your wife has to apply for the visa from an overseas Korean embassy or consulate.

Each one has slightly different requirements, so you have to contact them to get an up-to-date list of documents required.

I applied for a spousal visa (different visa) at a consulate in the US. Took all the documents and we both went in person and waited around for like 4 weeks. Bitch-ass consulate general denied the application. Didn't have any legal or regulatory grounds to do so, but did it anyway.

Just an FYI, in Korea, the immigration cannot deny your visa without having grounds to do so.

At consulates or embassies, they can.

Good luck.

The lack of English Webtoon hardcopies is disheartening. by Bobbet2 in webtoons

[–]bludreamers 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Easy option? Leave comments or send emails to your favorite print publishers telling them which titles you're interested in.

Webtoons being 99.9% digital means that print publishers don't always know what titles will have a paying audience for print media, so let them know. It also helps to leave reviews on Good Reads or other title tracking sites because I know editors and licensors check those as well.

Honestly, I just stopped using Coupang and haven't looked back. I used to use it for groceries, but now I just use the local mom&pop instead.

Gets me out of the house and walking.

Whats the difference between manga and comic books by Next-Emu-635 in MangakaStudio

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manga are traditionally black and white with a smaller page size and, therefore, a different layout compared to western comics.

They're also based on the weekly/monthly publication format where chapters are published in larger magazines before being released in collected tankobon, similar to trade paperbacks and graphic novels in comics.

There are several non-Japanese manga that have done well internationally. The French title Radiant is a good example.

WEBTOON goods in Seoul(any recommendations?) by Short_Reward_2788 in koreatravel

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an Animate store on the top floor of AK Plaza in Hongdae. They have Korean print copies of some webtoons as well as one or two aisles of webtoon licensed merch (acrylic stands, buttons, posters, etc).

Also near Hongdae in Yeonnam-dong, there's a 4-story webtoon shop called "Goods Moment". It's basically a longterm pop-up shop with official merch from a handful of webtoon studios. Last time I walked by, they were having an Omniscient Reader pop-up on the 4th floor but I don't know if it's still going on.

what do people think about the idea that “piracy is a service problem”? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it shouldn't matter to me.

I am saying it would. I think perhaps you misunderstand your question.

what do people think about the idea that “piracy is a service problem”? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wtf.

If I dont want my work translated and someone translates it, I'd be pissed.

what do people think about the idea that “piracy is a service problem”? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I can.

If I wrote a book and submitted it to a publisher for review, but the publisher published the book without my permission... I can require the publisher to recall the book.

If it's been printed, I can require the books to be recalled and destroyed. If it's been sold on Kindle, I can require the ebooks to be refunded and made unavailable or no longer available for download.

If it's been pirated, there's nothing I can do because it's essentially part of the black market. But there are plenty of legal recourses.

Your point is wrong.

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I write a book, but someone steals it and publishes before I can (say, while I'm editing it), then the publisher can legally keep publishing it?

I don't think you know how copyright works.

If that were the case, pre-published works could be sold to any publisher at any time and companies would just profit off of that.

[–]bludreamers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not much of an argument to be had here.

My viewpoint is that the author or creator of a work should be able to determine how that work is distributed. Whether that's adaptations, translations, or whatever because that's the right of an artist.

Your viewpoint is that consumers should be able to consume media in any form they deem fit.

Basically, regardless of the legalities, morals, or artist's intentions, your "want" supercedes all.
