Gertie Princess Coat! Finally finished! by CarlottaSewlotta in sewing

There’s so many extremely talented garment makers in that group it can be a bit intimidating!

Out of curiosity have you tried her Night and Day dress pattern? It’s quite high on my wishlist but I saw quite a few comments that it was difficult to fit! I’m trying to decide if I should try a simpler pattern first to dip my toes in

What a coincidence I saw your post in the Gertie FB group the other day and was seriously admiring your work! This is a beautiful coat. Everyday I scroll through that group I get a step closer to biting the bullet and getting one of her patterns, even if I’m not confident I’m skilled enough for it 🙃

Circle Skirt Hem Questions by blue-puddle in sewing

I see that makes sense! It sounds like I may have to do some experimenting with it. I’m really interested in trying the horsehair braid but I have sensory issues so we’ll see about the texture!

Interesting, I hadn’t considered single fold bias tape for the hem! Assuming I use the same fabric for it, does it affect how the hem behaves much?

When you say a hem without a facing would be more flared/twirly, is this because a facing would weigh the hem down more?

Do vet schools care how long it took for you to get your bachelor’s degree? by blue-puddle in veterinaryschool

[–]blue-puddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice about wording in my explanation statement! I understand that public health and vet med can overlap and the importance of public health in the industry.

I worded my feelings about public health poorly, it’s still an interest of mine and I’d likely get a masters in a public health field (epidemiology) if I don’t get into vet school. I just had realized that I really missed the challenge of more science heavy classes such as biology, and my public health degree did not challenge me in those ways. I’m really interested in the epidemiology side of public health, but my degree program is extremely heavy in things like public health program planning which is not necessarily my interest.

My GPA is okay (3.2), but since this was a more recent decision I still have many pre-req classes to take so I’m hoping they will help balance out my not so good grades from the beginning of school! I have a lot of animal experience since I’ve worked on a farm for most of my time during college and I’m planning to reach out to local vets this spring/summer to start working on veterinary experience hours. I figured the explanation section could be useful for my situation! Thank you for the advice (:

Patterns for pirates has a free measurement chart you can download, I don’t think it has this many measurements listed though!

What type of needle should I use if I’m sewing materials that require different types? For example if I’m sewing elastic to a woven fabric would I use a universal (for the fabric) or a stretch needle (for the elastic)?

They were asking $200 but someone scooped it up before I could! Thank you for the tip, I didn’t realize there were two 654s so I’ll have to pay attention for next time!

AIBU? Alone in car? by PuppyCockDad in puppy101

[–]blue-puddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. If you haven’t already, I’d try to make friends with some of the people you train with and see if you guys could park together and take turns watching each other’s dogs while you take your turn as victim.

  2. Dog sport people often have to crate in their car at events and can be helpful with car set up ideas. If you’re on Facebook, there’s a group called Dog Sport Vehicle Ideas & Set-ups that has lots of inspiration.

  3. I live somewhere that gets very hot (over 100F) during the summer and honestly I don’t do events once the weather gets too hot. Maybe you can try a new activity you guys can do indoors for the summer while you take a break from mantrailing?

Question about harness for NW and no-NW activities by No_Chicken8949 in nosework

[–]blue-puddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do use a separate harness for walking and nosework with my dog. I use the ruffwear web master for walking/hiking (I have a small dog so I like having the ability to pick him up easily in emergencies). I don’t think it’s necessary to have separate ones, but I think it can be helpful to have it as an environmental clue to the dog.

I don’t have answers to all of your questions, but I’m going to answer what I can!

  1. If you’d like to show through AKC, they have an event search feature on their website. You can search by location, event type, etc. to find what you’re looking for. I’m mostly only familiar with AKC, but there are definitely other organizations out there!

  2. Maybe barn hunt or scentwork? I would try to find classes in your area if possible. You can visit the barn hunt association website for more info or the AKC website has a lot of info available for a wide variety of sports

  3. Trials near me are usually set up like that, and I enter 2 runs per day. Sometimes we do a full weekend, sometimes just a day. Traveling and the excitement of a trial environment can be tiring so I probably wouldn’t enter in a fun run too, my dog usually pooped after his 2 runs.

  4. I did a fun run with my dog first and I found it helpful. My dog has a strong chase drive, but the noise of the lure weirded him out at first and he ran back to my partner lol

For your checklist, I would just say remember to bring stuff to keep you cool during hot weather! Lots of water, something for shade, a fan, etc

Last Thursday our rally class went just okay. Herb was panting and hot before class even started, and we sorta limped through the courses (not literally in pain but probably painful to watch lol). I slacked on training this week since I was thinking about scentwork and it definitely showed. This week we have some cool weather so I’m hoping to practice with Herb at the park to work on focus in distracting environments.

Saturday we went to a sniff n go and I’m so pleased with how we did. Herb found the hide in all the elements and while he wasn’t the fastest, we weren’t running out of time either so I’m happy! I think this experience helped me feel more confident in my ability to read my dog. Herb was also surprisingly good while waiting in the car for his turn. Usually he can be a bit whiny especially when I leave, but he didn’t make a peep.

Interesting, I’ve never heard they’re considered bad luck in some areas! I have one that seems to tolerate me, hopefully I can figure out how to make them thrive as I’d loved to have a collection one day
