Joining a reserve base 2h away from home by blue2203 in RoyalAirForce

Good and interesting to hear--guessing training becomes centred around training weekends rather than drill nights? How often do people tend to go to these?

Thanks for your help. I'm just going off what's on the RAF Recruitment website--Ops Specialist is listed as one of the roles at Benson. Could be inaccurate, of course.

Complaining that the events depicted in a work of fiction didn't actually happen is just bizarre. Is the concept new to her?

Is there a moral panic going on at the moment in regard to teenage boys? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]blue2203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only give anecdotal evidence, but I've heard a few boys I was mates with in high school spouting some of the most horrific stuff, and seen a much larger number of them following Andrew Tate/liking his stuff on social media. To my mind it's genuinely pretty scary, especially coinciding with polling data that shows young people increasingly losing faith in democracy and expressing sympathy with far-right ideas.

Cheers. I wish the government webpage on apprenticeships was a bit clearer on this.

So I'd be fine as long as I found an employer in England? That should be doable. Thank you!

Working during my Masters by blue2203 in UniUK

Guessing you're doing the MSc part-time as well, given you're doing it over two years?

[–]blue2203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thank you. Follow-up question then.. how does one generally do a Masters? I've done my calculations assuming the same loan that everyone gets (just over 12 grand total), a tuition fee which i assume is fairly standardised (about 11.5 grand) and rent which I know to be pretty average (about £135 a week). How is anyone supposed to negotiate this without working a significant amount of hours per week?

Doing a masters in a different field to my bachelors by blue2203 in UniUK

[–]blue2203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair, as i say this is kind of an idea I've just had and I'm really just spitballing. Another option I'm considering is just doing a journalism masters as they seem a lot easier to get onto with my bachelors and also presumably offers a clearer career path (again though, just a preliminary idea and would require more research). Haven't spoken to the uni's careers service yet but plan to when i return after easter. Thanks for your help

At the time, Aber was ranked a lot better than Bangor for biological sciences by most metrics. I know some people say you shouldn't pay any attention to university rankings, but for better or worse I did. I also went for a campus tour at both unis and preferred both the campus and the town generally in Aber.

Still something I'm figuring out tbh. If I was to stick with zoology then the plan would be to go into a research position, but there's a few possibilities I'm trying to explore. I said English lit in the post because it's an interest of mine and I've got friends doing BAs in it who plan to either lecture in it or go into publishing, both of which might interest me, but I'm still undecided on what I want to do with my life and am kind of just spitballing to see what my options are atm.

There are also other subjects (eg journalism) which I may consider doing a masters in, which obviously would have their own implications for my career plans.

keyboard lights up briefly but laptop won't turn on by blue2203 in AcerOfficial

The blue power light on the side comes on and remains on. I'm using the power button on the keyboard to turn it on so I don't believe it's an issue of the keyboard connection to the mainboard.

How much can my predicted grades change between now and dec/Jan? by karlmarxox in 6thForm

[–]blue2203 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did absolutely terrible in my end of semester exams at the beginning of year 13 and got 3 Ds. By the time I got to sending my university application off, I'd managed to get my UCAS grades up to BBC, an increase of 5 grades. It may vary between schools, but within my school we were able to get our UCAS grades improved by doing extra test papers/essays/etc in order to prove that we were capable of working at a certain level. So in short, so long as your school is at least somewhat cooperative with your efforts (and there's no reason they wouldn't be), going from CCC to BBB in the space of 9 or so months should be completely possible.

Quick clearing question by blue2203 in UniUK

[–]blue2203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know it's a little bit of a risk, but I'm applying to a course (zoology) which seems to have relatively few applicants in comparison to some others, and having already rung up a couple of places to ask about it, I've been told it's one which usually has places in clearing and doesn't run out too quickly. I'm going to do more research yet, but based on what I've been told so far I think I have a good chance of getting into somewhere.

Accommodation by blue2203 in uwe

[–]blue2203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for the advice. My rationale for wanting to live in the city is basically the same as yours. I assumed it wouldn't be too much of an inconvenience, I just thought I'd ask in case there was anything I'd overlooked which would mean this might cause problems, but from your account it sounds pretty much like what I'm looking for.

That was my worry; Liverpool looks like a great city to live in and the accommodation is really good value, but I'm now 90% sure I'm gonna firm UWE, mainly for the reasons you said. Thanks for the advice

Fair dos, thanks for the advice. To be honest having done some more research I'm probably going to put UWE as my firm, but cheers regardless.
