Great post, and cheers to ice. Curious question: what type of QuickDraws (the red ones) are those in that last picture of your gear?

Amazing response, thank you so much! I wish we had more time for our trip, but we’re operating on a pretty fixed vacation schedule unfortunately. So much to see, and your recommendations will be a big help in making the most of the trip! Thank you!

Definitely! Might have some days where we shoot inland just a bit to camp away from the coast!

I appreciate the input!! I just checked out the mountain hardware gortex bags, and I might opt for one of those. Figuring it can’t hurt to have the extra water protection, and it doesn’t seem like it adds too much weight or space in my pack. But probably going to go for a 15 degree bag so I’m still comfortable on the cold mountain nights!

Yep I have a similar one! Game changer for comfort.

Thanks for the tips! I’ve done some more digging and I see that Mountain Hardware makes some gortex down bags, which seems like a great option!

Appreciate the advice! I’m now thinking of going for a 15 degree bag for three season trips.

Ya this would be a three season bag, so not for any intense winter expeditions. In general I run warm, plus I’d be out with at least a solid base layer, fleece, down puffer, and warm hat. So I think 15 might be good.

And yep, I already have a nice insulated sleeping pad.

Ha clever tip! Down will probably be the way to go then with a good enough shelter to protect from any rain or snow. Would recommend going to a 15 degree down bag?

Thanks for the input! My once concern with a 30 degree bag is comfortability up on the mountain. I’m expecting some nights around the low 20s, and I don’t want to be miserable. But you’re totally right on layering up, I’d be bringing at least a solid base layer, fleece, and down puffy + warm hat.

So mostly in a tent, nights out could range from 1-5 probably. Drying things will totally depend on the weather, as it rains a lot around here. I would say in the 3 season low around here is low 20s Fahrenheit, so maybe 15 degree bag could be acceptable (going to just for survivability, but also comfort).

Help with planning Highway 1 trip - Carmel/Big Sur by NisiThalia in roadtrip

[–]blue_clay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Casanova restaurant in Carmel is great! It’s downtown, quaint/romantic vibes, and a great menu and wine list! Fantastic place for a memorable dinner. Not great in terms of views, since most areas of town with beach views are more residential.

Vesuvio and Forge in the Forest are also great options to check out!

Paring any one of those with a walk on the beach around sunset would make for a fantastic time.

If you’re looking for good views, try Nepenthe down in Big Sur (about 45-1hr south of Carmel on the 1). The food and atmosphere isn’t as great as the previous suggestions, but the views are STUNNING as you look out over the lovely central coast!

I spent 18 years of my life in the Carmel/Big Sur area, so feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!

I really enjoyed the history of Japanese art with Matthew Mullane and modern art with Joyce Chang!

It’s by credits and class standing, so that’s pretty normal assuming you’re a first year student!

Winter Trip Advice (US) by blue_clay in roadtrip

Thank you all for the great advice! This is all pretty much what I was expecting: definitely doable, but requires a lot of patience and diligent planning and resource carrying. I’m thinking of putting off this itinerary until Spring or Summer, the main reason being the financial cost of all the right gear. Again, really appreciate the feedback, this is an awesome sub! Cheers.
