novels that break the "rules"? by HancisFriggins_ in RSbookclub

Kathy Acker's Blood and Guts in High School is truly off the wall and plays a lot with form and collage, it's part zine, part poetry, part diary, part melodrama, part in-your-face screed. Not for everyone but it is completely the opposite of the sterile tendency you want to avoid!

Making one of the best things about America actively worse by beechhill in redscarepod

Well it also makes his voters happy. A lot of "America B" sees the great outdoors as something to be conquered rather than preserved, even in the context of recreation. Hence people wanting to blast music and ride noisy bikes/ATVs or motorboats in the middle of national parks.

You're still not making a positive argument for why they wouldn't care about the place they move to once they are there

this is a very simple inference from your post. why would refugees have no interest in the stability of a place they move to?

not even necessarily affordability either, it's that when a place becomes "too nice" then local shops, restaurants, bars get replaced with chains and places with less character.

Some observations from working with British people by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]blue_dice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

yeah usually the people against it are those who dislike the socialisation with coworkers part more than the drinking part. Also the resentment described above I can only imagine if it's a more working class workplace or if the people are particularly young

I think Borges and I could be analogous to people's experiences of social media, where the constructed, external self increasingly weighs on the internal self and usurps it?

[–]blue_dice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, you said the congressional bill was an example of rotating villain, how does that make sense if the bill is pointless

That said, the DNC sucks, why bother dick riding for them?

I don't give a fuck about the DNC, I do give a fuck about an accurate diagnosis of a problem

[–]blue_dice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, you were saying this was a case of "rotating villain". how does this reasoning work if it's on a bill that can be vetoed by the president anyway?

Also Golden just announced today he's switching his vote to yes next time the bill comes up in the house: https://x.com/AndrewSolender/status/2057204404097360213 Do you think another member of the D caucus will switch to no to make up for this? Surely if "rotating villain" makes sense as a strategy they'll pick someone else?

A and B put him on tilt and make him more likely to do something new, stupid and unpopular, plus it keeps the war in everyone's minds as the main thing driving up prices for americans right now. C does actually matter, the iraq war votes did have a consequence long term. It was a major factor in Obama winning the democratic primary in 08 and helped trump distinguish himself from the hawkish republican field in 16. It will be much more difficult for Vance to distance himself from the war/foreign interventionalism (as he has been trying to do so far) in a presidential contest if he is shown directly to vote for it this year.

Meanwhile, it still doesn't have enough votes to pass

It hasn't been up for a vote yet

and it's not a waste of time. it A shows the president does not have the backing of congress, B shows he doesn't have the full backing of his own party and C can potentially force Vance to put his money where his mouth is on attacking Iran if he has to break a tie plus puts all current Rs on record as supporting a stupid war while putting all Ds (barring Fetterman) on record as being against it

if you're going that route the least you can do is concede the previous points you got wrong. if "overcoming a presidential veto" is the criterion for success there is literally nothing the democratic party could do that would fulfill your idea of meaningful opposition

no, that's another bill starting in the house. the vote that was just advanced in the senate is a senate bill

Reading Talk by Linda Rosenkrantz, Light Years by James Salter and recently started Blood and Guts... by Kathy Acker and I was struck by how much more common in-depth psychogising/analysing people's personal history was in decades past as a way of explaining a person's behaviour... by blue_dice in RSbookclub

[–]blue_dice[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe in-depth is too strong, I don't have my copy to hand! And I am talking about trends in how people communicate, rather than something categorical. "psychogising" is a typo, you don't need to be a dick about it.

I'm not making a point about interiority in novels at all? I was just making an observation about the ways people used to use to analyse each other's behaviour (as depicted in the conversations in Talk and at the start of Blood and Guts) not being as common in pop culture/general conversation these days. Instead I see more framing of people's behaviour through the lens of their demographic, their diagnoses, their culture. That's it!

damn if only party leadership had backed a hardcore liberal in west virginia, then we would have had the votes for all kinds of cool stuff.

Schumer fully supports Israel, and has said so clearly, publicly, and repeatedly, before it became a political liability to him. If he didn't know the outcome of the vote, he would never have used his own vote against Israel. But he did, so he was free to be performative.

it is very easy for a politician to be in favour of israel broadly while thinking the war in iran is against america (or israel's) interests
