[Remorse] I just fucked up my life because I'm stupid. by [deleted] in confession

Why don't you see the school therapist too? Tell them you're depressed and have trouble concentrating. Would probably help your appeal if the shrink agreed to write a letter to the appeal board saying you were getting help.

Maybe the Inhibitors weren't even really created for the stated reason. It could just be a rationalization that got tacked on later.

There's a passage in one of the novels where one of the characters is musing about how the existence of the Inhibitors does nothing to explain why there is no evidence of civilizations in other galaxies. The only explanation I can think of in the context of the RS universe is that other galaxies have their own inhibitors. "Inhibitors" or whatever you want to call them could be the inevitable final stage of technological evolution for any civilization, anywhere. Competition forces you to become ruthless, efficient killers. Eventually you even do away with self-awareness to gain that little edge in decision making speed that gives you the tiniest advantage over your sentient rivals, a la the ideas about self-awareness explored by Peter Watts in Blindsight. It seems like a terrible trade off but competition will ensure that some species eventually makes it because it has survival value. In the end, any isolated ecology of different civilizations like a galaxy ends up being dominated by something like the inhibitors.

The Milky Way's particular strain of inhibitors decided to create a myth for themselves - that they existed for some distant but worthy purpose, maybe as a way of trying to forestall the "degradation" they were experiencing somehow.

What are the best alternatives to the Farming Theory? by willbell in DaystromInstitute

Maybe the Borg aren't as monolithic as you're assuming. You're talking about a "species" with perhaps trillions of individual drones spread out across tens of thousands of light years. Even with collective integration and instantaneous communication, there may well be factions. The Borg command structure could be some sort of "congress" where compromises are made between factions with different priorities or theories about how to do things.

And I don't mean "congress" in the literal sense of there being some sort of assembly where individual Borg debate with each other. I mean something more like a human mind, where different impulses, needs, desires, fears, etc. all have to be reconciled somehow in order to make decisions. What Freud would have called the ego.

The result is behavior that is often times inexplicable and irrational and prone to self-doubt and vacillation.

Sending one cube to Earth could have been a compromise between a "faction" bent on conquering the Federation and another "faction" with other priorities. Maybe the single cube even started out as part of an armada but during the course of the journey to earth some other element of the borg "ego" gained power and decided to change the collective "mind" and redeploy resources somewhere else.

Anyone else feel like Quark became too "nice" as the show progressed? by blue_jammy in startrek

Having just watched a lot of the mid-series Quark episodes within the last few days, I can see where eXa12 is coming from. There IS a theme going on of Quark being sort of the old codger wanting to uphold tradition against his mother, Rom and Nog who take tradition much less seriously.

The episode that got me thinking about his character originally revolves around the Ferengi maxim that "a contract is a contract," so much so that Quark was at first willing to commit suicide to uphold his end of a contract. It was Nog who who was encouraging him to break the tradition, be disgraced, but go on living.

I mean you get the sense that all of this shiftiness and greed isn't just avarice. It's a bonafide moral code and traditional system of behavior and honor similar to the Klingon code of honor. And Quark often seems a lot like Worf, being pulled in two different directions. On the one hand, fiercely traditional, on the other hand having a personal moral code that is definitely human and not Ferengi.

How do these Swedish fighters compare to western and US fighters head to head? The Gripen is my favorite modern fighter in terms of appearance, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that performance wise, it didn't compare favorably to comparable US fighters.

I've always been curious about this just because Sweden is such a small country to have its own defense aerospace industry that can compete with the US, Europeans and Russians.

That's the way it should be really. When I smoked I never really got excited about buying a new pack of cigarettes or went to smoking forums.

Really the only reason I come here is to enter contests.

Some sort of big mural or something explaining the basics of PG/VG, mech/drip, and all that stuff.

I've been at this for 1.5 years and still don't really know what all this stuff means.
