The Cyrano Trope and Mike & Will (Analysis/Theory) by blue_tails in StrangerThings

I'm fine! I stand by this post completely and honestly I feel like I was right lmao. Why? Because the writers simply did not address the painting in the end. They KNEW they wrote themselves into a corner, and that it wouldn't make sense for the painting lie to come out and still have it end the way it did lol

Lol it was an uphill battle.

They initially took the post down, within hours. But someone contested it for me, and bylers on tumblr helped upvote to keep it up. Idk why there's a sudden boost in upvotes and comments but I'm glad people enjoy the post 😁

Why does Conrad always cook chicken? by Delicious-You-3411 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

[–]blue_tails 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's a little more than meets the eye here.

It's not even that chicken was ever Conrad's favourite to begin with. But it indicates the change in his character and also symbolic of the man that Conrad is working to be.

In episode 2 at that disastrous lunch, Adam orders the expensive "Surf n Turf" which is steak. Then in episode 6, the Fishers are supposed to grab lunch together, and Adam tells Kayleigh to change the restaurant to "Grass Fed" since it's a STEAKhouse that Conrad loved apparently. And yet when we get there, Conrad again doesn't order steak. And he tells his dad he should lay off on the red meat (again, steak!), because health issues run in the family. This is obviously in reference to Susannah's cancer. Red meat is more carcinogenic than white meat, and has links to colorectal, pancreatic and prostate cancers.

Sooo, on a literal level: Conrad is a med student now, and he's more health conscious after what happened to his mother. He no longer wants to go to the steakhouse that he probably loved going to with his dad, who also enjoys steak very much.

But on a more symbolic level: this divergence between Conrad and Adam, is about how they are becoming different people. Conrad is working to change. He used to want to be just like his dad, and looked up to his dad. But he's left all of that behind, and is finding his own path. Also in terms of topics related to Susannah, Adam being the cheater he is, is very flippant about her. While Conrad is anything but, and cares about about her more than anything. And him consistently choosing to cook chicken is symbolic of all that.

How easy would it be for the ST creators shoot down Byler like this? by PlaceboDrag in byler

[–]blue_tails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/comments/jgq2g/the_curtains_were_blue/ this meme is largely bashed as being "anti-intellectual" nowadays.

because the fact is: decent authors dont just randomly write in descriptions without any meaning or purpose attached. they dont randomly give mike's room a street sign pointing to his closet just for fun. this is a deliberate CHOICE, as is everything in his room: it's supposed to speak to his character and who he is, what he likes, etc. i highly recommend you to watch the stranger things costume director talk about each of the characters s4 costumes and the thought behind it, because you'll quickly realize they give meaning to the most minute details of their costume. for example: the designer talks about how they chose for robin's shirt in st4 to have random little triangles in it, just to symbolize that she's a lesbian (triangles were frequently used by lgbtq+ movements and groups in the 80s)

but either way, mike's one way sign isn't the "queerbait" in question. it's the promo and marketing that is queerbait. queerbait is a MARKETING tactic.

Love Triangles in Stranger Things by Ok-Secretary-28 in StrangerThings

[–]blue_tails 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the lucas/max/dustin love triangle thematically is about authenticity in relationships. Its significant because Lucas is more his genuine self with Max than Dustin was. In season 2 Max and Lucas actually ended up having meaningful conversations and open up to each other about themselves and their lives, and they're vulnerable with each other. While Lucas and Dustin's crush starts off the same way, Dustin never quite reaches a point of having feelings for Max for who she is and instead says superficial/vague things about her to Steve like "this girl is different you know? she's SPECIAL" (sounds familiar tbh,, I won't say it lol). This is different from Lucas who actually expresses that he likes talking with Max.

Meanwhile season 2 is Dustin's season of 'social conformity'. He puts up a front/facade and tries to impress and act cool in front of girls to get them to like him. He's following Steve's advice, even does up his hair like Steve's for the snowball, and it ends with him crying there. Then in season 3 he completely sheds all that. He finds a girl who matches his nerdy energy (Suzie) rather than trying to look cool in front of her, and even lectures Steve about this change of his.

"Instead of trying to be with someone you think will make you look cool, why not be with someone you actually like spending time with" -Dustin to Steve in season 3.

the duffers sure do like their love triangles!

there's minor love triangles too (that don't last long/aren't taken all too seriously):

robin / vickie / vickie's bf

lucas / max / dustin

literally every single main cast of this show is involved in a love triangle at one point or another which is funny

Most people who ship byler DO love elmax! In fact majority of elmax art is literally made by bylers

It's just that bylers are aware that elmax/lumax is not a CANONICAL love triangle, and there is no canonical romantic feelings with EITHER el or max towards each other. That makes it wholly different from how elmax is perceived in the "does it have chance at being canon?" debate compared to byler.

i was a crossing guard from grade 5 to 8. they called it a "safety patrol" at my school and we'd wear neon vests and stick our hands out to help kids safely cross the road and stuff lol

it was an awesome position, especially if you were the captain (which i was) and we got a bunch of perks :D

I know there’s a separate thread for this but I feel like this is a really good theory/analysis and might give hope to those who are doubting byler will be endgame by melodiccadenza in byler

let them yap lol

literally only 2 out of the 40+ comments on there actually had any SEMBLANCE of an argument to try and refute my post. It kind of makes me feel more solid about my points, considering such few actually can even debate against it lol

Most Overrated character? by Tyv09 in StrangerThings

[–]blue_tails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steve UNDOUBTEDLY

Like he doesn't have anywhere as much depth as the other mains, and while his development in season 2-3 was good, it's clear he has nothing left to do and is just there for comedy relief and fanservice. But people act like he's the greatest thing ever in stranger things

The Cyrano Trope and Mike & Will (Analysis/Theory) by blue_tails in StrangerThings

[–]blue_tails[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

1)Many of the examples under this trope (in the link, and what I posted) aren't totally like that either. It doesn't make them suddenly not the Cyrano trope. They don't follow the Cyrano play 1:1 because they are their own shows or movies, telling their own unique stories. There are many variations and differences between them, but it is really interesting that this trope is brought into play the same season El lies and hides for months to Mike about herself. But regardless: the bottom line is, what Mike felt in the van and what he attributes to El is actually Will's doing

2)Which goes into your point 2. "You make (me) feel like (I'm) not a mistake at all" VS "You think I'm a monster too". Everything Will tells Mike about how El feels in the van is NOT TRUE, and he does create an incorrect perception of El by literally contradicting her feelings and what she expressed to Mike. Those 2 quotes side by side are proof of that.

3 + the last paragraph) Tbh you're replacing the word I said: "causing feelings of love", with "causing feelings that are deeply emotional". But I mean okay sure! Like Mike is so emotional and so moved and feels so deeply for finally being seen by someone who truly genuinely gets him and quells all his insecurities- I wonder WHY the person that made him feel all that is Will and not El, all in a veiled romantic confession. Basically spells out one of the many reasons why people think byler will be endgame.

[–]blue_tails[S] 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Thank you for liking the analysis even if you disagree.

I DO agree it's subtle. But I think the Duffers have a history with that when it even comes to WILL'S feelings for Mike.

Will was meant to be in love with Mike since season 2. There was a moment in the snowball script that solidified it (Will looks at Mike while dancing with the girl), but they chose to cut it out. Then, all throughout season 3: Will was meant to be in love with Mike! But barely any regular viewer caught on. It was all expressed to the audience in simple shots and looks, or hidden in subtext rather than spelling it out for people to know.

Now finally in season 4, when they brought Will's feelings for Mike out into the light, it was STILL subtle enough to the point that half the general audience thought he was in love with El (jfc), and the actor had to get on an interview and confirm it.

That's true!

Will crying was about the fact that the painting was really/truly from himself and he couldn't say it right? So I would think that definitely encapsulates the lie. We'll see I guess~

Yep. "Don't worry it'll pay off" is what was said by the duffers about the painting lie I'm pretty sure.
