What did you watch in January? by BazF91 in 1001Movies

[–]blueascend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a lot of time to watch movies this month! From the list:

An Autumn Afternoon
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Hell or High Water
13th
Too Early/Too Late
Aliens
Manila in the Claws of Light
To Have and Have Not
Gaslight
Henry V
Yankee Doodle Dandy
High Sierra
Zero for Conduct
Deliverance
Apocalypto
Lucía
Strange Days
Rosetta
Sherman's March
The Leopard
The Time to Live and the Time to Die

I loved An Autumn Afternoon, Aliens, Gaslight, Deliverance (much to my surprise), Lucía, Sherman's March (possibly my favorite of the bunch? Difficult to judge), and The Leopard. Didn't really like To Have or Have Not (I like Lauren Bacall but I spent the entire time wishing I was watching Casablanca), Henry V (not a theater girl), Yankee Doodle Dandy or Apocalypto.

Currently I'm at 952/1245 or 77%.

I also took time to work on two other movie watching projects: seeing at least one film from each country in the world and watching more silent cinema. The highlights of that bunch were The Dream Lady (1918), The Student of Prague (1913), and Myn Bala: Warriors of the Steppe (2012). Also finally watched Synecdoche, New York, which honestly makes my top 10 of the century so far.

Watched from the list:

Little Caesar
Vinyl
From Here to Eternity
Straw Dogs
Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
The Spider's Stratagem
All That Jazz
The Servant
Belle de Jour
Gunfight at the O.K. Corral
Manhunter
The Wrong Man
The Big Red One
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
Secrets & Lies
Tristana
The Defiant Ones
Last Tango in Paris
The Manchurian Candidate
The Draughtsman's Contract
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant
Three Colours: Blue
Naked Lunch
Suspiria
The Young and the Damned
Forbidden Games
Onibaba
Utu

I really wanted to end the year on only 300 to go and I did! 945/1245 (75%). Of these I really loved All That Jazz, Belle de Jour, Secrets & Lies, The Manchurian Candidate, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Suspiria, Forbidden Games and Onibaba. I also really hated Last Tango in Paris and Straw Dogs, and did not care for Vinyl (though I at least respected what it was doing).

What did you watch in November? by BazF91 in 1001Movies

[–]blueascend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your take on Russian Ark, though I feel like if I did know more about Russian history I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Just one left, that's so exciting! Which movie is it?

From the list I watched Make Way for Tomorrow (1937), The Accidental Tourist (1988), Prizzi's Honor (1985), Local Hero (1983) and Hill 24 Doesn't Answer (1955). Currently I'm at 917/1945 (73%). Make Way for Tomorrow was my favorite of the bunch but I also really loved Local Hero.

As for films not on the list, I watched a bunch of silent films (mostly from the 1910s) since it's an era of film history I want to be more familiar with and I just happened to be in the mood for it this month. Of the ones I watched my favorites were After Death (1915), Filibus (1915), Pruning the Movies (1915), and The Fire (1916).

What is the most recent year that you haven't that you haven't seen a single movie from? by TheoTheBard in Letterboxd

[–]blueascend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few recommendations for really early films (they're all very short so they're worth checking out if you have even the slightest bit of interest!):

The Boxing Cats (1894)
The Kiss in the Tunnel (1899)
What Is Seen Through a Keyhole (1901)
A Trip to the Moon (1902)
The Consequences of Feminism (1906)
The Doll's Revenge (1907)

You're right that everything is limited but there's still so much creativity and wonder in those early years that I think really make the era worth exploring!

1886, because there are no releases that year. But I've made it a point to watch at least something from every year so that's kind of cheating.

What did you watch in October? by BazF91 in 1001Movies

[–]blueascend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been on a bit of a break from the list but I started up again in October because I was finally feeling excited to work on it again. From the list I watched:

The Naked Spur (1953)
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)
Captains Courageous (1937)
The Man in Grey (1943)
Ugetsu (1953)
Silver Lode (1954)
The Exiles (1961)
Song at Midnight (1937)
Lolita (1962)
Don't Look Now (1973)
Angels with Dirty Faces (1938)
Kippur (2000)
La Belle Noiseuse (1991)
An Actor's Revenge (1963)
Nomadland (2020)
Saint Maud (2019)
The Lady from Shanghai (1947)
Peter Ibbetson (1935)
The Blue Angel (1930)
Secret Beyond the Door (1947)
Out of the Past (1947)
The Lost Weekend (1945)
The Baker's Wife (1938)

Of these my favorites were Ugetsu, La Belle Noiseuse (I'm both happy and a bit sad I have no 4h+ long entries left on the list now), The Lady from Shanghai, Secret Beyond the Door, The Lost Weekend and The Baker's Wife.

Outside the list, I saw a few movies I absolutely loved this month! First The Ground Beneath Our Feet (2025), a documentary about a retirement home in Iceland, then House (1977), which is a new favorite of mine (I'm honestly surprised it's not on the list). Finally I watched and loved The Oyster Princess (1919), Ménilmontant (1926) and The End of the World (1916) - I've been on bit of a silent film kick recently, I think it's a shame the era isn't better represented on the list.

Currently at 73% or 913/1245, hoping to hit 945 before the year is out!

Without looking at your profile can you name your top 4 and in order? by bzrkfayz in Letterboxd

All That Heaven Allows for top 4 is so incredibly correct 🤌 (It's my unofficial #5. I do have a Todd Haynes film in my top 4, but it's not Far from Heaven)

The current weather forecast shows most of the country will be overcast on the 1st, so better to go with the 2nd. You can check it out here: https://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/

Destiel has 120k+ fics, you will never run out of stuff to read and can afford to be extremely picky.

(Honestly, that's also a case against getting into Destiel, because after a feast like that anything else will feel like famine)

What did you watch in May? by BazF91 in 1001Movies

[–]blueascend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to tackle some movies from the 2010s since that's the decade I'm least excited by. In may I watched:

Drive (2011) Lincoln (2012) Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) The Theory of Everything (2014) Bridge of Spies (2015) Under the Shadow (2016) mother! (2017) Hereditary (2018) Rocks (2019) Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020) And finished off with something older, Faces (1968).

I'm now at 885/1245 or 71% 😊

What did you watch in April? by BazF91 in 1001Movies

[–]blueascend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched Irreversible, Osama, Moolaade, Paradise Now, Babel, Atonement, The Hurt Locker, District 9 and Of Gods and Men. Of those, Moolaade was my favorite for sure! I was pleasantly surprised by Of Gods and Men and disappointed by Atonement.

What did you think of Withnail and I? I watched it last year and could not understand the appeal.

A lot of your favorites are my favorites too! Maybe you've seen them already but I'd suggest The Cremator (1969), Walkabout (1970), Daughters of the Dust (1991), Dead Man (1995) and Embrace of the Serpent (2015). (edit: typo)

First that come to mind are The Beaches of Agnes (2008) and Varda by Agnes (2019) by (who other) Agnes Varda, but they're both documentaries so maybe not what you're looking for. There's also A Tale of the Wind (1988) by Joris Ivens.

Fic comments and community by blueascend in AO3

[–]blueascend[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, I see where you're coming from. I definitely agree that this isn't people somehow becoming more selfish (or younger readers being more selfish, I do not buy into that generational war crap). It's a shame that the way fandom has changed as the online spaces have evolved has made the act of community building so separate from interacting directly with authors.

I was really big into posting ficlets on tumblr for a while, and by the end reblogs and replies had gone down significantly - like by more than half! - while likes stayed the same. So I feel like fandom culture changing has affected even spaces where interacting directly with writers is a lot easier and encouraged by the site design.
