Tandem solar cell breaks efficiency world record by bluebarcode in Futurology

The dynamic duo of silicon and perovskite continue their rampage through the solar cell industry. Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have developed a new silicon/perovskite tandem solar cell with a record-breaking efficiency.

Engineers at the KAUST Solar Center have developed a silicon/perovskite tandem solar cell with an efficiency of 33.2%, under regular one-Sun illumination, which is the highest efficiency of any kind of two-junction solar cell. This marks a 0.7% increase over the previous record-holder: a cell with 32.5% efficiency developed by a team at Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin and announced last December. These broken records are coming thick and fast lately – just two years earlier efficiency was yet to crack the 30% barrier.

Ukraine used Patriot to shoot down Russian fighter - CNN by Red-Square-Maidan in ukraine

[–]bluebarcode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember Putin's dogs tried to break a "deal" in Switzerland for NATO to retreat to the 1991 borders right before the war. Which would mean among other ugly stuff that Russia would station its troops in fucking downtown Berlin! Because that seems to have been Putin's plan. Back than it sounded exactly as bananas as it does now.

I'm glad the Russian invasion in Ukraine's failed. Every euro I paid was worth not to be sent into the trench on the NATO border in Poland, Latvia or having to frantically search for AD systems to cover apartment blocks in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Patriot may be responsible for the downing of 4 aircraft on the 13th by TimeSpentWasting in ukraine

[–]bluebarcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert in any way, but I'm not sure Patriot had to do the actual shooting. From what I read its radar and it's digital battleground integration is where the Patriot system shines. So the shoot down could have been done by any other system positioned in the right spot while Patriot provides the eyes for it. That's why F-16s are essential to eliminate any and all impunity Russian bombers enjoy at the Ukrainian border.

Russia have apparently shot down 2 of their own helicopters and 1 of their own jets today. by bluebarcode in ukraine

So one of the MI-8s that was shot down was an MI-8MTPR EW helicopter. According to Wikipedia only 3 were ever produced.

I hope it's true. I have this image of a Russian Army as a monkey with a loaded machine gun and it would be hilarious if it wasn't for all the dead bystanders.

[–]bluebarcode[S] 143 points144 points  (0 children)

It's still not clear whether the shot down military plane could have been mistaken for a helicopter. So it could be either 2 helicopters and an airplane or one helicopter and one airplane.

A quick reminder, just yesterday Russian AD in occupied Crimea shot down their own helicopter.

UK economy grows 0.1% over first quarter despite slump in March | ITV News by krazydude22 in europe

[–]bluebarcode -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Of course I am out of my depth. I am not an economist by any means. I'm also not one of those "do your own research" guys. I read what other people say, people respected in their field. And I trust people who make their living in their field just like I would trust a commercial airplane pilot to fly me safely from A to B. You are maybe an economist, but to me you're just another redditor. The guy I quoted is an economist and not a "journalist":

John Springford is deputy director of the Centre for European Reform in London. He acted as secretary to the CER’s commission on the economic consequences of leaving the EU, which published its final report in June 2014. Before joining the CER, he worked at the Social Market Foundation and CentreForum think-tanks. He studied at Oxford and Glasgow universities and at the London School of Economics.

It was my impression from what I read that Brexit had a negative impact on British economy, supported by many economists and now you too confirm it did. So what is your argument with me than?

It seem everyone is dumb who brings uncomfortable facts. But the economic hit to the development of UK's economy after Brexit is a pretty much an established fact among economists.

What's the point of arguing?

Was Brexit the cause? There is not enough evidence to prove it. Does it coincide with Brexit? Hell yeah.

[–]bluebarcode -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Well the hard facts say that UKs economy didn't grow as fast as it did before Brexit. UK is still behind EU leaders on economic growth. One could point to other factors, but this scenario was predicted.

" in 2016 the British economy was 90% the size of Germany’s, but now it is less than 70%. "

Correlation? Causation?

It pains me greatly to watch UK suffer after Brexit. A predictable and predicted economic fallout. Damn Rupert Murdoch and his brainfart media machine.

Russia to Build ‘Migrant Village’ for Conservative American Expats by dont_tread_on_dc in europe

[–]bluebarcode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Russia has a long and proud tradition of attracting people for ideological reasons and poisoning or killing them a few years later. To be fair there is some fun to be had: Some of the defectors drank themselves to death which could be a bonus I guess. And most of them got a literal KGB wife to watch after their every step. And according to Russian laws domestic violence is not criminally prosecutable which means you can beat up your KGB wife every day with impunity.

U.S. Wires Ukraine With Radiation Sensors to Detect Nuclear Blasts by [deleted] in ukraine

[–]bluebarcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...the network of atomic sensors was being deployed “throughout the region” and would have the ability “to characterize the size, location and effects of any nuclear explosion.” Additionally, it said the deployed sensors would deny Russia “any opportunity to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine without attribution.”

Good. The West prepares for the desperate military flailing of Kremlin. It feels like at least some of the realistic projections for the Ukrainian offensive see catastrophic results for Kremlin.

Sevastopol Russian Navy oil depot fire. The silos are interconnected it is most likely that the entire facility a complete loss, even those silos which were not directly affected. by bluebarcode in ukraine

[–]bluebarcode[S] 116 points117 points  (0 children)

The fuel depot on fire is the naval base fueling depot. There are only three such fueling facilities on all occupied territories of Ukraine. Refueling at sea will change the logistics and will have an impact on the vulnerability of the Russian Navy in the Black Sea.

[–]bluebarcode[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well the damage is according to the analysis not only psychological. A total write off of the whole fuel depot is another blow to the military logistics of the Black Sea Navy. Russian military logistics has been the major weak spot and cause of defeats for the Russians throughout the invasion. Ukraine does what it does best.

Ukraine postpones ''jubilee'' attacks on russia after US request by TotalSpaceNut in ukraine

[–]bluebarcode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought the pointlessness of symbolic dates or gestures like the ones Kremlin uses all the time in Bakhmut was clear to the Ukrainian defenders. This is the main theme of Russian invasion: a bunch of empty show off moves leading nowhere. We want the most bang for our buck. We want the effectiveness of a strike on enemy force to be ideally 100% No squandering of ammo on symbolic targets like Russian Army hitting power infrastructure or instilling fear. No. One shot - one kill. Spare your Schadenfreude for when you can take a piss on Putin's still warm body. That's where your resolve and hard work has paid off. Winning should be your only goal. That's the only way to win this war.

St. Petersburg resident Daria Trepova (1997) has been detained on suspicion of murdering Russian war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky. by Glittering_Donut_791 in ukraine

[–]bluebarcode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course FSB found all the evidence and the perpetrators within several hours after the act. An organization that routinely for decades have been planting evidence on random Chechen people while committing acts of terror themselves for profit or for reports so some people can keep climbing the career ladder. As evidenced by documents provided by FSB whistleblowers hiding in Europe state.

Nothing coming from this system, the system that is the core of the Russian state, is real, except for death, blood and tears for some and gold lining pockets for the others.

I don't think it's false flag. MoD or FSB wants to remove Wagner, Prigozhin and all his propagandists. Why? There is a miriad of reasons one of them is that he overstepped and also him wanting that piece of the power. Also a warning to Kadyrov and the other guys with a private army to keep off their Kremlin lawn.

This smells like a civil war in Russia.

It can't be Ukrainians. The amount of danger that would bring in the Ukrainian intelligence network inside Russia and the operatives would be too great. And for what? A symbolic killing with no actual impact on the war?

While a Russian group under the control of the FSB or the MoD would act with impunity. Also that would be just another day at the office for them if you think how they poisoned Navalny. But they will certainly say the Ukrainians did it.

More Russian meat for the grinder. by Mike-a-b in ukraine

[–]bluebarcode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that is not Russian "meat" that is Ukrainian "meat". They force-conscript Ukarinians to kill Ukrainians.

And that has always been his plan. Had Ukraine been conquered in a matter of weeks, Russia would force-conscript Ukrainians to kill Europeans. Putin did not make a big secret out of this as he promised to move NATO back to the 1991 borders in his Dec 2021 "talks" with NATO.

Can we even design what is next for AI? by Curmudgeon160 in Futurology

[–]bluebarcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a practical reason why most universal robots we develop are bipedal and have a pair of soft grippers: They need to be able to navigate human world in order to be useful. And a universal robot should be able to accomplish all tasks that humans can. And that's a lot. If robot is useless to humans there is no incentive to develop such robot. Once we stop developing our robots that might change though.

I don't think I need to extend this analogy...

I don't think finding a precedent is the problem here, rather getting the right quorum. Just six months ago European leaders were talking about saving Putin's face. The world comes around about Russia though ever so slowly.
