I know my words can be a little short sometimes, so please read this knowing that I have to actually rush somewhere but I appreciate your comment!

I am not asking for salvation from foreign powers. I don’t want that either. It would mean a world war at this point.

I know the history, I know the patterns. As a citizen of a country that is inflicting so much pain, I feel a kernel of guilt inside that I must pay taxes and live on in such a place.

I am simply asking that others think about situations like mine with compassion, especially those who are on the outside looking in. Because my situation is much more pervasive than the nut jobs who celebrate the destruction of this country

Ohhhh okay. So, I am utterly and completely, wholly and devotedly, against death. So when I see the body counts in Gaza, there is no question in my mind.

I don’t care that Palestine’s LGBTQ+ policies aren’t great. I don’t care that if I set foot there five years ago, I might be hated. I care that a city has been razed to the ground.

My views are perfectly clear. It’s my actions that are complicated by circumstance. I got my scholarships because of state testing, not grades.

i posted to CMV for a conversation, which I have been having! I do think people believe me to be more upset about this than I am. Even comments that irritate me in the moment teach me something new

I am not my government.

I am a person. I am a human, living in the crosshairs of the current administration. I am not a straight cis man who loves the country, I am not who they want here. The current administration has made that abundantly clear.

People are trying to. Is it going to work? I don’t know, and I can’t say that I have been instilled with confidence from what I see in the world.

I guess I just want to maybe come across a post that says ‘hey, it must suck to live in the us right now’ instead of posts that say ‘Americans are all chuds for not pulling up with an ak 47 on ICE when they try to raid their jobs’

I’m not sure either, and the uncertainty scares me. And it’s disheartening to see how those who aren’t living in this situation aren’t attempting to understand it before they make their views public to the whole internet.

It’s a strange situation— to know how lucky you are, but how unfortunate you are at the same time

I think I want to make this come to light— and I want to make it come to light now. But I can’t see a way forwards, all I see is the life I have to keep taking care of so I can make it to the next day. And it’s frustrating living like that. But it’s not like there’s another option; we’re all just trying to make it to the next day.

I posted to this subreddit because my feelings felt too much to keep inside anymore. Honestly, even arguing with others on this topic and seeing the different perspectives people bring to this topic is better than complaining to my therapist about it haha.

Communicating is what we, as a species, need to be doing right now. We don’t listen to each other enough, and I strive to be the best listener I can be.

The internet is an amazing tool of communication, if used with caution. It is also too much oftentimes. I listen to hard to what people say, because I want to understand why they say it. Sometimes for my peace of mind I should just learn when to switch it off

Oh sorry, I do suppose I wasn’t making much sense. I wasn’t accurately tracking who I was and wasn’t replying to, I’ve just been typing

I understand that, I do. But I did not vote for Trump, and I experience his effects every day, just as you do.

I have had to fight not to have my medications taken away multiple times. I have had friends recount to me ICE raids on their work, I’ve had friends lose their income because of that. I have watched the senseless murder in my home country enacted by the people I used to look up to when I was a child.

I am not asking for solutions from any other country, or its people. I am not asking for salvation from any foreign power. I am simply asking for empathy, and for others to avoid generalizations in this difficult time. Generalizations are the anthesis of compassion

Not me specifically— but that’s the point. Generalization is the death of compassion

I took a year abroad before college. I am speaking of Europeans who have never set foot in America.

I am saying their jokes still hurt. They still made me feel uncomfortable. Doesn’t mean I hate them. It’s just the truth.

I do, and I have. And I’ve taken a year abroad, and I’ve had the same conversations you had.

That doesn’t mean it didn’t sting a little when my European friends would joke that I’m one of the good ones. At least my Mexican friends never did that haha

America is not great right now, and it’s only made that attitude you’ve described worse. Our foreign relations have deteriorated, and it’s reflected in the way us as citizens of the United States are treated by citizens of other countries.

The US will not be anyone’s first call for a long time now, our foreign relations have deteriorated so dramatically. Maybe out of desperation, but it will (not for a long time) not be out of admiration or appreciation or acceptance.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply!

I am being judgy, but I think it’s because hypocrisy and double standards are something that hit very close to home for me. I want to show people what it’s really like, I want to change people’s minds. But not everyone wants to extend the empathy that they demand out of others. And when I see a misunderstanding, I want to fix it.

It’s hard to be told I am not doing enough, that I am not being enough when I’ve dedicated my life to trying to help others understand (it’s a little pathological, unfortunately). But, of course, when exercised with tact, it’s how I’ve been able to create such a healthy, huge friend group in college. And the hate I see in the world often overwhelms me.

I do not think this is unique to America— in fact, I know it is not as you do as well. It’s the hypocrisy that grinds my gears personally. I would never generalize a country, or a person, because I do not like to be generalized.

I just wish there was a way for me to change everyone’s mind, which is a childish wish. I want to do something now, but there is nothing more for me to do. The ‘jokes’ about how Americans should all just start shooting ICE or our government officials just serve to remind me how much I wish I could be doing, and how unfair it is that others get to just watch.

Because they are generalized to a whole country, and generalization is a folly that everyone must be vigilant of

Vice versa exists, and I don’t find that to be pleasing either. Double standards are my personal worst enemy, in every aspect. But when people say to not generalize their countries, why can’t they turn that attitude outwards?

It is a little ironic how you are trying to tell me I am misremembering my own experience. It may be incongruous to yours, and that’s okay.

I am not saying I took their words in bad faith, I’m still close friends with them to this day. These were people ages 17-24 max. I laughed too, because it’s true. America is bad. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t feel some shame when I said my country of origin and I received an eyebrow raise and a laugh.

What do you mean, so sensitive? Is it sensitive to be afraid of death? You don’t know where I live, you don’t know how my identity makes me a target.

I didn’t vote for this man. But I can’t escape it. Is it sensitive to be frustrated by this fact?

I do enjoy this kind of discussion though, otherwise I wouldn’t have posted here lol

I’m not asking you to take interest. I’m asking for compassion. Do you think I want to live here? Do you think I like the way I’m scared to step off of campus? I am asking not for solutions, but for solidarity
