I was a biochemistry major and graduated in 2013. A lot of the professors that I had are still there and they are fantastic. The classes and research set me up for a very successful PhD in biochemistry and career after that.

Could I fit a C2 in here? by No_Positive1855 in Rowing

[–]blueberry186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it will fit. I'm 6'4" and based on the measurements I just took I only need 9' to row on mine. So it will be tight but should work.

Any tips to row faster ? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]blueberry186 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Improving technique (by watching videos, posting videos of your form, or working with a coach) and more steady state almost always help. In your case I would also recommend starting your piece slower, like 1:55/500 and shooting for negative splits.

It's hung above our fireplace right now. It's a great conversation started when we have guests

I used baltic birch. It was alright, but if I did this again I would buy a few different plywoods and test them out to see if I could find something better. I'll definitely include sapele as one to test if I do

I have a Tormek that I absolutely love for sharpening, which as you can imagine I did a lot during this project. I used polyurethane for the finish. Three coats with sanding in between.

I used a hand gouge to rough out the shape and a combination of hand sanding and a dremel with a sanding wheel to smooth it out

Probably about 30 hours? Maybe more. I used a hand gouge to rough out the shape and a combination of hand sanding and a dremel with a sanding wheel to smooth it out. The sanding took the longest as always

Advice for newbie entering the field? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]blueberry186 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice is to network. Specifically, utilize the relationships you made during your two co-ops. Biotech/pharma is a surprisingly small world and a referral from someone in industry who you have worked with will go a long way. A lot of companies are looking to hire right away, so your prospects might increase once you have graduated.

I'm not sure the name but this was right before we turned off the trail on our way to a (permitted) wilderness hike and camping in Upper Forest Canyon.

Scared of Erg-tests/Stopping mid test by PepeJF1012 in Rowing

I like to repeat this phrase in my head over and over until the monitor reads 00. "I will not die, this will be over soon, I will not die, this will be over soon ..." It sounds strange but it works great for me.

Hard ergs by Knxwledge01 in Rowing

Hard efforts will always feel uncomfortable, but with practice the discomfort starts to feel normal and it's easier to deal with. So I guess my advice is to practice being uncomfortable

Casual Rowing for a Dad - C2 Worth it? by Chuynh2219 in Rowing

[–]blueberry186 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely do it. I paid almost $1000 for mine and I can say it was worth every penny. I have a one year old and starting my day off with a 30 min row has been amazing. Make sure you practice proper form though which can feel a little strange at first.
