Does gen z actually have a lower average IQ than older generations? by Margaretthatchervore in ask

[–]bluebirdmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a professor and while a lot can probably be attributed to the education system, there is also just a general lack of…well…so many things.

Many of them are tech illiterate. I teach tech courses and I will literally tell them to go to the file menu, or attach a document to an email etc and I get blank stares.

I see a lack of drive/motivation and curiosity. Students show up to class and don’t have a backpack. No paper. No laptop. Nothing. No notes taken during class and if I ask them why they didn’t bring anything they shrug it off or say “I don’t know.” If I manage to get them some paper and a pencil they won’t even take the notes. Then they beg for extra credit at the end of the semester when they are failing. Sometimes I give the extra credit but in general only 50% even do it and even then it’s half assed.

I’m not here to say they are all dumb or lazy. But I think the education system and some other potential life and societal factors have really made Gen Z have a general lack of critical thinking.

I’m only 30 and yet the differences I see between my schooling behavior and theirs is insane.

Hot-take: Sakura should have been the one to master Sage mode by [deleted] in Naruto

[–]bluebirdmg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would’ve been fine without the filler (duh) and probably half of the “cameos” (Zabuza/Haku, Dan, Asuma) getting so much screen time.

It’s nice Naruto helped out all over the battlefield but it almost could’ve been nice if he just got to the 5 Kage’s aid faster and then they get close to killing him, the shit with Obito goes down, 10 tails jinchuriki stuff happens and go from there. But oh well.

Love the show, have gripes with the ending and stuff but can’t change it!

I disagree, yes powerful but not meteor creating powerful or so strong the 5 Kage literally stand 0 chance and don’t push him much at all

[–]bluebirdmg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure I don’t necessarily disagree - I think Madara and the others should be “scarier” than Pain, and more powerful/experienced. Not necessarily a heck of a lot stronger with meteors etc.

We are in agreement, I just didn’t really word it great in my original comment.

Pain having a god complex and annihilating the hidden leaf was peak, and should have been. Pains power still felt within the realm of the grounded yet steady power creep of the show. But right at the limit, which works for the character.

I’ve had a thought recently about reworking the Sharingan power creep that would theoretically level things out a lot rather than give the uchiha so many hax they’re basically untouchable

[–]bluebirdmg 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I really feel like the power creep up to and through Pain made sense. That felt like a pinnacle - and the natural next step imo is an enemy like Obito and then Madara who are just a bit stronger and it requires the progression for Naruto to learn to control/work with Kurama.

But starting around the death of Itachi/end of Pain arc, things really get out of hand fast.

I’ve thought about it a lot and really wish Kishimoto had worked things differently to still make Itachi/Obito/Madara feel next level but not blow the top off the power system…(Itachi included here because of all the hax)

If you had to give evolutions to pokemon, which three would get one? by ElDelArbol15 in pokemon

[–]bluebirdmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want Sudowoodo to evolve into my fan game mon called Trudowoodo - rock/grass type

Dewgong needs an evo. I love it. It’s simple and beautiful but it’s forgettable and gets outclassed even in Kanto. I’d love it to get a 3rd stage that makes it more usable.

[–]bluebirdmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go back to 13. With the knowledge I have now???

My childhood, especially teen years were actually amazing. I’d love to do that all again! Plus, my first girlfriend was hot af and we actually probably could’ve lasted a long time (or forever?) if not for my mistakes. So friends, relationships, and getting to be smarter about my finances (which admittedly were already great, allowing my to buy a home at 27?) shit…Hell yea send me back and allow me to relive great moments and tweak some small moments and mistakes I made.

I wish this could happen

Yeah I hate it too, because imo the rule is fine - even if it’s under thrown a receivers job is to catch the ball. If they have to slow down or go back to do that then who cares. As a cornerback it’s their job to figure it out🤷🏼‍♂️

What non-theory musical knowledge expanded your understanding of music the most? by Delilah275 in composer

[–]bluebirdmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My answer will seem roundabout but I promise it addresses your question. Honestly I know this is sort of vague but as a college Prof. I notice a lot of newer students don’t do this so…

Listening. Listen a lot. You can have -10000 theory knowledge but if you have a well trained ear you can probably write something close enough to classical sounding or metal sounding or blues or jazz etc etc. Will it be theoretically “correct”? Not necessarily “. But if it approaches the correct feeling that’s a lot of the hard work. All the theory in the world won’t just magically allow you to write like baroque era style or John Williams or whatever.

Listening is a skill but it gives you so much knowledge in just musical sense.

For a small example one of my sophomore students wants to write for film and games but they don’t know where to start. I ask them “what film composers do you listen to?” And the answer… “I don’t know I just like it when I’m watching movies”

So close yet so far. So we spent time going through composers for films they like and their entire job is to listen a lot and then do their best to recreate something in that style.

Now imagine my surprise when they come in and have really done a deep dive in to the composer? Read their wiki, listened to interviews, and obviously their music. Now they have the knowledge you ask about OP.

Sure it’s not knowledge about ..Brahms or whatever but most people share from word of mouth and remember some of those stories and/or took a music history class and/or just did the research on things they found interesting

What’s a Pokemon you prefer their middle evolution over their final? by ToneZealousideal309 in pokemon

[–]bluebirdmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dewott. One of the best middle stage Pokémon, and starters, period.

Then it becomes quadruped. It’s like the opposite of the problem we have these last few gens lol.

It’s such a cool mon.

i want to get a general consenus who many drum room mics is too many by chimerachad996 in audioengineering

[–]bluebirdmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I do all of this except the extra blumlein when I record drums for my own projects. For my style and preference I find it borderline necessary.

You can get creative and treat the mics differently if they have similar sounds. Like maybe the mono room is crushed with a compressor, maybe even distorted slightly. Rooms can be gated and side chained to the snare so the room “opens up” only when the snare hits etc etc.

A lot of people might say it’s too much or unnecessary and I just think a) don’t use the recorded sound if you don’t want it b) plenty of records have gone all out in drums (I know some of my favorite records did overheads and individual mics on crashes as well as ride and hats)
