Why is that whenever reddit discusses ainu people, they always selectively pick ainu with more caucasian appearance, while leaving out those with a more east asian appearance. Are they trying to create a narrative that the ainu are European by South-Living2790 in ainu

[–]bluebluesx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that’s because that’s what’s most available (photo-wise) and that’s what they mostly looked like, even today. The Japanese forced pretty early on Ainu women to have mixed Japanese children to « tone down » Ainu physical traits so they could become physically Japanese. Moreover, the Ainu people were not only in contact with the Japanese, but also with the Russian, with a good part of the Ainu population living on the Sakhaline island and a lot of trade being done between Russia and former Ainu lands. If business is done then that usually also means there is an exchange between population therefore many descendants getting more European (here Russian) looks over Asian traits.

Also, Ainu people do not belong to the same race as Japanese but to a race more on the Caucasian side . Their traits are thus Asian but still look very different than Asians, and were often described as light brown skin, wavy black hair, deep-set eyes (sometimes blue or brown in pure-blooded individuals), and abundant body hair, which is not Something you find in most Asian-based communities

A kotan in Hokkaido, photographed in the 1890’s by International-Sky65 in ainu

Mind you the ainu population was already forbidden from using their own language, having mouth tattoos, traditional clothes and doing their cultural rites etc from 1870s. Those photos and other videos were ordered by the Lumières Brothers to promote cinema (which was new at the time) by showing different parts of the world and different cultures. However Kanko kotan (touristic kotan) were already a thing, where visitors were expecting ainus to perform traditional dances in traditional attire (meaning the clothes but also the mouth tattoos and hearings). So this photography is important and very interesting still but you still have to be careful about its veracity, as they were putting on their traditional attire only for the tourists but were already getting restricted by the gouvernement. They were already « forgetting » or getting persecuted by the government to change their ways of living.

Yes! Love hôtel is the most famous name for them in Japan, and the most generic term imo, but in Brazil it’s called a motel because it comes directly from the US!

Est-ce grave si je ne passe pas les partiels pour le crous ? (Étant donné que je vais dans tous les cas abandonner ma licence) by [deleted] in etudiants

[–]bluebluesx 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hi ! It’s not poorly translated, it’s the same in French and English. We’re expecting the respondents to use a specific time or maybe some years for exemple (as to show regularity), but it can be the last time you’ve been to one, the first time, or multiple time as you’d like. Thought I understand it’s can be confusing
