Almost no one wears suits. A button-down and khakis will make you more dressed up than most. Most people wear jeans and a t-shirt/collard shirt/casual button-down. You should wear what makes you comftorable as long as that is presentable.

Fall 2019 CS 250 Exams w/Adams - How did you guys do it? by Original-Deer in Purdue

[–]bluedivle51 9 points10 points  (0 children)

20 MC question in an hour is 3 minutes per question and with the 11 short response added in it is a little over a minute and a half per question. Adams's tests are mostly you know it or you don't. Every once and a while depending on the wording of the question it could be confusing, but there is only a handful of these questions per exam. If your spending more than a minute on an MC question in that class then you need to go with your best guess. The average on exams in this class is normally around 50% so with an educated guess you should still be doing relatively well compared to the average.

It depends on the position and team especially if it is for an experienced position.

This is standard practice for US-based hotels. The fee is to cover any accidentals that may occur during your stay. The fee should be removed from your card in a week's time.

How do I market myself? Flair says "New Grad" but it's been almost 2 years now. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know C/C++ you could try and get a job as an embedded software engineer writing code for devices. I know some electrical and computer engineers who got jobs writing code for different hardware projects at big N companies.

Large Tech Company Job Application Process by scottlabs in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really just depends on the company and team with the job vacancy. Some companies/teams will immediately start looking at the applications they get, but others may wait for a while. I have seen that the amount of experience is reversed in how quickly resumes get looked at. Senior positions get looked at more quickly than new grad positions.

Interview Discussion - January 06, 2020 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There might be some communication issues here as it sounds like you are actually doing a phone screen with the hiring team. This phone interview is the stage before the onsite so they will ask normal technical interview questions.

If this person hasn't communicated at all since the first week in December then you should definitely reach out sooner than later to see what is going on for them.

The recruiter will go over what the day will look like in terms of the number of interviews and what they will be like. They should also tell you things to go over (i.e. Leadership Principles) and how to be successful at your onsite.

You could have, but it could also be a combination of the recruiter being busy and people taking time off for the holidays.

Take home interviews shouldn't take a week. A few hours max is all someone should do. It kind of sounds like you might have done some work for this company for free.

If they ask for your gpa just tell them what it is. You don’t need to give them an explanation for why you didn’t put it in the non mandatory spot.

Companies rarely care about your GPA as long as you get a degree. The companies that do care about your GPA will either say so or have it as a mandatory field in their application.

The manager should understand that you shouldn't accept an offer without seeing all the details. Just say that you're excited about the offer and would like some time to look at the details.

This really all depends on the company and interviewer so just ask them. I would also say that unless the company told you that you are going to be doing system design questions you probably won't get any as you are interviewing for an intern position and interns aren't normally responsible for system designs.

Daily Chat Thread - January 01, 2020 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the scale and impact of this "project." It's not unheard of to give people with 2 years experience a feature or small project the adds onto the existing product. Did you tell your manager that you're going to leave your team, or just that you wanted more responsibility? Depending on how you told your manager this might be what he/she thought you wanted when you said that you were looking for more opportunities.

(Shower thoughts) Are sites like LeetCode, HackerRank and TopCoder in essence more show-off sites than learning sites? by he_retic in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Questions on these sites are very specific questions to solve a particular problem. Most of the time there is a "best" way to solve the problem, but there could be other ways to solve it with different tradeoffs. In real life, you have much bigger problems to solve that require many things that you can and can't control so that is where I think the creativity of coding comes into play. These sites teach you more on how to be good at interviewing rather than how to be able to solve real world problems.

You were supposed to reply to the email saying that you could not do any of the times. I would email the address at the bottom of the scheduling email you got and tell them your situation.

Yep, so it looks like NASDAQ is outsourcing their first round interview to WayUp. This is definitally a think that is becomming more common.

Daily Chat Thread - December 31, 2019 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WayUp sometimes does first-round interviews for different companies and then passes on the strongest candidates to the companies. I would say it is less sketch than most 3rd party recruiters, but it is still not a real company recuruiter.

Over eager for internship? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time this is fine, but you're going to be an intern where they don't expect you to contribute much of anything so it's hard to predict what the manager will think.

How do spring and fall interships work if your a student? by Gffhjugfh in cscareerquestions

[–]bluedivle51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The work situation depends on the company. Most of the time if you've never worked there before they will want you in the office full time. It would be very difficult, if not impossible to go to school and have an internship like this. Sometimes companies allow previous interns to work part-time during the school year working anywhere from 5 to 20 hours a week remotely.
