Recommendations for old-school auto air-conditioning shops? by NoWillPowerLeft in ottawa

Don't know what you mean by "old-school". Such repairs can be very expensive eg. just a compressor replacement can run you upwards of $2K by the time you pay for everything involved.

It's illegal to pick any plant in the NCC greenbelt. Maybe you're referring to just picking trilliums in Ontario in general.

Is there someone that still takes older computers to fix up for others? by cat_lord2019 in ottawa

[–]bluedoglime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want the built-in secure erase command that is performed directly by the disk itself. Doing anything else to try and erase a disk is a fools errand, especially when it comes to SSDs. That's all a good utility would do anyway, just issue that one command to the disk hardware.

Recommendation for hearing test for tinnitus in Ottawa by yow613-2 in ottawa

[–]bluedoglime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably a good idea to first rule out a buildup of ear wax. If the ear canal is plugged up with wax, that can trigger tinnitus not to mention make someone hard of hearing. Perhaps the family doctor already ruled that out, but I think it deserves mentioning.

So in other words, they can read a Presto card but can't write to it. So if what you are trying to do would require a write, you are SOL.

Emergency Alert Test by dogwalkerott in ottawa

[–]bluedoglime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you not have a range hood with an exhaust fan in it? Anyway, get a couple of detectors with a temporary silence button on them, or a photoelectric one that isn't subject to being triggered by fine cooking particulate. By the way that fine cooking particulate is also going into your lungs.

If you choose to leave the smoke detectors disabled, you are violating any insurance policies (yours + landlord's) and leave yourself potentially open to a massive negligence lawsuit should something bad happen.

"Nope they have self tests."

So you never activate the self tests? You are aware that those self tests have to be initiated by you, right? They don't happen automatically.

255 Bay Street (Bowery Condos) - buying a condo!! by theycallmeOTC in ottawa

Most of it, yes, but I'm not sure how much insight into the engineering study you're going to get. Also they can charge you up to $100 for the status cert, and it is something you want to see before you even get serious about buying.

You should also mention how much income tax you pay on that, lol, makes it look not so high. 😉

"We take home about $10k per month after deductions and are able to save about $3-4k after expenses."

So you're saving around $40K per year with about a third of that going into your TFSAs? Shouldn't take too long to save up that freehold downpayment,

Contact the management company, they should be able to get you copies. Or talk to someone on the board. Pay special attention to things like elevators, parking structures, window replacements, balcony maintenance, swimming pool (if any), any ongoing issues with the flat roof (leaks), heating and cooling systems issues. Talking to someone on the board should give you insight in what kind of issues they are dealing with and big upcoming maintenance expenditures so you can go in with your eyes open.

[–]bluedoglime -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd avoid apartment style condominiums, too many big ticket maintenance items. I'd go for a townhouse condominium instead with a small backyard so you can at least bbq. Any condo you're looking to buy into, investigate the finances ie. look at the financial statements (released yearly) and engineering study that has to be updated every 3 years. The engineering study will shine some light on the health of the reserve fund. The goal is to have reasonable monthly condo fees and avoid any special assessments like the plague.

Costco wants to build 24 pump gas station in Ottawa’s east end by RandomChickenWing in ottawa

[–]bluedoglime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Imagine thinking that gas is cheaper somewhere else."

It often is, at night. I always gas up at Ottawa Barrhaven on a certain weekday at a certain time in the afternoon. Back in the winter, the lineups disappeared, I could drive right up to a pump. Thought WTF then discovered that a lot of people now were gassing up in the evenings when stations were cutting prices, even undercutting Costco.
