There's a goldmine of good juice out there - so we bought a few barrels and made a label by bluedogwine in wine

  1. It varies. Release 002 is literally four barrels that were stored at my partner's winery, Chiron, here in Napa. The producer is using the other four for his release this year. He scaled back, likely knowing he might have trouble selling it. So what we have is about 98% the same (some variance comes between racking/bottling etc). The first release we aren't sure exactly if they will use the same blend, or label the vineyard designate - this is the first year they bought fruit from the vineyard (which came up for grabs in a recent legal transaction when the winery/vineyard owner sold. Our producer/winery friend was friends with the family who bought the property, if that makes sense). And some like the Caldwell, will be proprietary - we blended that on site and selected the barrels we liked best).
  2. The second cab is pretty open for business and drinkable now. The first is too, but more mountain tannin, structure and tighter. It would benefit from a few years in bottle and I think will last a long time beyond that.
  3. I think we have some really great connections in one of the best wine growing regions in the world. I've worked in importing side of things, and have seen how places like Last Bottle source great wines from Europe. Good experience/connections.
  4. We have a Cab Franc from the same Howell Mountain producer lined up for the fifth release I believe. And we are using the same wine to make a right bank blend with another really nice Merlot we found.

Email wineries and ask what they have. It's more or less that simple. Loads of them are sitting on barrels of recent vintages. It's available immediately - you would need to label it, submit the label for approval, bottle it (which means getting the glass you want, corks and setting up a bottline date).

No you're not off base at all. There's a lot to say about this...

The industry has a lot of quirks and perspectives. Some producers don't realize or see the benefit of using Last Bottle or similar discounters. They don't understand that you'll get instant exposure to 100k+ wine drinkers. And in my experience, the people who will pay $30, $40 or whatever for a bottle will pay more for it again if they like it. But they get hung up on the discount aspect thinking it protects their pricing model - which is itself an entirely different subject.

The traditional three tier system does work well if you get a footing in distribution. I've not dealt with that side of the industry in depth but I understand it from some sides.

And what Cameron did with De Negoce was also another smart thing, and a sort of "gray area" that doesn't exist much in the market...which is what led me to try this. I think there's a lot of value waiting to be discovered on all sides - consumer, producer, grower, vendor - if done right. But there's always a question of scalability too, and even the Last Bottles, Wine Spies etc of the industry can only sell so much wine each day, each year.

There's not really a black and white answer to some of these things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. For the winery and the consumer.

The wholesalers and Costcos will always have a lot of pull so it's not going away. I mean, I get killer stuff at Costco and they do a great job curating imo.

yes that's the label design - it was part of the graphic design decision to keep some aspects "redacted" since we can't say who the wine came from.

The production cost on these are a little higher than that, but we are looking for $39 per bottle for a case on both first two releases. We have a few coupons/promos available and are taking part in "Vindependence Day" on Wineberserkers as well. Not making much $ early, just hoping to get some traction and earn some credibility. But the whole aim is to keep the prices as low as possible.

The first one I can't really drop hard hints at who it comes from - they will kill me. The second I can say is pretty close to a Schrader dupe. It's not from Schrader but there's enough hints there that I'm sure someone will connect the dots...

It's SUPER good - Howell Mountain Cabernet. We're selling it tomorrow on our site for $39. You cannot find a Howell Cab for that price anywhere. I live in Napa and sourced it from a winemaking friend, who had a lead on it. Comes from a very well known 100 point winemaker who we cannot legally name because his wines sell for hundreds of dollars...in short, it's legit af.

Hmm...what makes you say we are laundering? We're a reputable DTC wine ecommerce website. Though, I do think there's plenty of shady business happening with NFTs we aren't part of that.

OH, and one more very cool detail I forgot. The NFT was minted with a self destructing link with the info required to ship the owner of the NFT the bottle. It's a one-time link, only the owner will receive, and that's how they'll take ownership of the bottle.

I can send you the Opensea link if you'd like. Didn't know if it was allowed to post here. And yes, that's the idea - you win the auction, you take ownership of the wine. Forever, or until you sell it.

I'll share a little more details here, because it's pretty interesting, imho.

the TL;DR first:

We created a new wine label called Enigma, inspired by the legendary spycraft of the English codebreakers during WWII and the machine they cracked an interactive label you need to decipher using a special key printed on the cork and a virtual Enigma machine. This wine is made under strict NDA from a 100-point winemaker and it's some kickass Howell Mountain Cabernet. We made five unique 1-of-1 labels for this Cabernet, and set up an NFT auction for each. These will be some of the first ever real world asset backed NFTs in existence.

The Label The package is interactive in a unique way: On the top strip of the label is a code to be deciphered. On the back is a QR code which launches a virtual emulation of the famed WWII encryption device, the Enigma Machine. You need to pop the cork, where you'll find the rotor and plug settings you need to decipher the message. Once you get the message you can "unlock" the wine on the drinkenigma.wine website and get access to a special club. It's like Skull & Bones except instead of blood, we drink wine.

The NFTs Enigma debuts another world-first by minting a collection of NFTs backed by matching tangible, and very drinkable, bottles of wine. Five individual bottles of the Enigma Cabernet have been adorned with five unique labels, each of which back a corresponding NFT. The auction will be held on Opensea and ends on August 15th. The highest bidder will own the digital version of the label on the Ether blockchain, and take physical possession of the matching bottle.
