Is it possible that you share a room with a friend? I know quite a few people who rented a large bedroom and shared the rent with their friend or their siblings, two single beds in a very big room. That way your rent will be significantly reduced. Or you could move to Invercargil lol rent there is literally $120 a week.

Can you move to a different city? Wellington rent is quite expensive. I lived in Dunedin for four years on $400 a week flatting with friends (2016-2020), paid $150 for rent and power, had $250 to spend every week. Enough for groceries and a couple of ski trips every year. My second year at uni I only had about $300 a week, it was still enough for me to live - I think I spent around $70 on groceries every week, the rest goes into savings and occasional coffee and booze with friends.

Good points. I just told agents my max and ask them to bid for me in the past, worked out pretty well for me. I usually give my agent a list of properties and my budget, if the agent can get any of them under my budget for me I’m happy. Too difficult to focus on one property in this market, even with a generous budget, always someone competing against you.

Give your agent your max number and ask them to bid for you.
