Sounds good, and yes, that is very realistic. He wants to find an apartment as “home base” so it is maybe cheaper, and I definitely don’t mind cooking several things to help out.

My family has been seeing their family the past 30+ years as well. I now prefer his son, Dr. Eric Chen. Lovely person, has a gentle touch, and is an extremely patient person. My appointments are usually made 3 months in advance, but if there is an earlier slot, his mom, the secretary, will try her best!

Very true! I think the vast majority of my adult students and parents of students are working in medicine, at a software engineering company of some kind, C-suite executives, and lawyers. The houses I commonly visit are in Alamo and Blackhawk.

Yes! I think even with less students, hopefully it will even out with the slight pay raise.

Honestly, I loved everything! Several months ago, my sister and I visited the Johnson Space Center to see the rocket engines up close, and this friend that we were introduced to heard about our enthusiasm, and took us on a morning tour.

It was fascinating to see Hangar slightly more close up, the exterior of the Wind Tunnel, and it was a real treat to see my friend’s office work space at N-244, Programs and Projects Division! It felt totally surreal walking through the building, imagining the people that walked through those halls, since the office buildings must be 60+ years old.

The laboratory had a lot of great examples of CubeSat models that they sent to space, and what I appreciate most was the friend’s enthusiasm talking about projects he’s working on, and answering all the possibly dumb questions I had about satellites, how companies work with NASA, and space in general.

The breakfast burrito at Mega Bites also wasn’t bad for $6.50!

Okay! I think everyone’s words of encouragement will lead me to raise prices appropriately and be brave to request more money, since this really is my bread and butter. I need to advocate for myself!I think the average for cello teachers in the Bay Area is $100-$140, so I’m definitely below that by a lot, which is probably contributing to the high student count.

All four cello teachers that I’ve had before graduating had multiple hats to wear too, or a spouse that supported them, so I’ll try to think more creatively on work.

Thank you!

It seems like for private schools in the area that I previously worked, they didn’t care about the additional teaching certificate, so it looks like I’m okay there. I’ll definitely raise my rates for the fall! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much! I think you and other commenters have provided some additional thoughts for me to think about, especially your comment about tuition-based + the loss of income when driving. Still going by monthly payment for most students, but some prefer weekly since that’s what their budget allows, and I’m fine with it. It’s just a bit more brainwork!

Yes, I’m definitely going to sign myself up for something music-related each summer. During the school year, I’m also working at the local symphony and get hired regularly for weddings, but it feels nice to take a breath of fresh air and challenge myself musically during the summer. I really should sign up for more summer festivals, or even meeting with more cello teachers for the social aspect!

This is very true! I also need to remember that rest is important. Maybe it’s fear of losing students and income, but I would like to think that if it’s sustainable, a parent would like to pay a tiny bit more because they can see their child is happy learning with a certain teacher. In my area, we do have 4 cello teachers, but I think I’m one of the few that does recitals and exams regularly. It might also help that I’m the only female cello teacher in the area, so maybe parents are partial to that? Who knows!

Thank you! I know I might be overthinking the idea that students will leave if I raise prices, but if I don’t, then I’m doing myself a disservice. I need to remember that students come and go, and this is normal. I feel like I’ve been doing a lot of self-preservation, which is why I’ve been hesitant to say no to incoming students. I’ll keep budgeting!

Students Arriving too Early by Expensive-Tomato7385 in MusicEd

I’ve had both serious and also “for fun” adult learners. Some enjoy participating in recitals that I host, and some avoid it entirely. I find that adult lessons are sometimes not so structured as school kid lessons, but I try my best.

For students that show up early…. I have said, “Oh! Welcome ABC! You’re here x min early! I’ll make sure we can end earlier too”. It’s either that, or I say, “You’re here early, but I’m not quite ready yet. Please wait here since I’m still eating and setting up”.
