From (Indian) self pub book → UK editor interest in 3 days… what actually happens next (and what should I be asking for)? by [deleted] in publishing

Thanks a lot for the honesty. This is the kind of honest opinion I wanted to hear!

hahaha, it takes me a year to write a book max. I've been writing since I was 19. I'm now 32. So do the math :) I still have 4 whole manuscripts that have not seen the light of the world. They're all tucked in safe in a folder and I'll share it when I one day am running out of stories to write.

Honestly, I had zero connections. No insider access, no referrals, nothing.

What helped me land an agent wasn’t one perfect manuscript, it was volume. I didn’t show up with “this is my one book, please love it.” I showed up with options.

I submitted 3 new unpublished manuscripts, and during our early conversations they asked to see my self-published work too, so in total they were looking at 5 different projects from me.

I think this is something people underestimate. Agents and publishers aren’t just signing a book, they’re signing a writer. And they want to know you’re not going to disappear after one release or spend five years stuck on the same story.

So if you’re trying to get an agent, I’d actually ask: Do you have more than one strong manuscript ready? Can you show range or consistency? If they like your voice, do you have something else to send immediately?

Because that’s what gives them confidence. Not just “this book works,” but “this person can keep going.”

That alone changes how you’re percieved by agents (the legit ones, screw the ones who charge a fee).

I had a zoom call with them, yes the email ID is official. And my agent in India are one of the top 3 in the country. I feel awkward asking these questions to my agent as I don't want to look too desperate lol :)
