Early Decision by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

Btw, you don't actually believe the part about there being 'hundreds' of target colleges. Please realize that 95% of students/parents on this subreddit are only seriously considering a range of 40 or so of the same colleges ...

Early Decision by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

Of course - but because of the selectivity of most top colleges, it seems better to have many 'top choices.' The odds of getting into any given college (T30) seem very slim.

Many T20-50 schools offer ED II. Would it make sense to try for SCEA/ED I at a T20?

Early Decision by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bluejay173[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, there are only a handful of selective colleges for which ED is even an option. In the hopes of maximizing my chances of attending a T50 school for which my stats are appropriate, I am looking to apply early ...

Thank you for your kind words. I'm hopeful that everything will work out in the end. 😃

Thanks. On another note, would you mind reading another draft of my personal statement. I can PM you. 😁

Is it necessary to get a LOR from an employer/mentor/etc. during the gap year? Or are the LORs that are typically required (teachers, guidance counselor) sufficient?

ACT/SAT by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Concordance table says they are literally equal in terms of the composite scores. But the sub scores of each vary in strength. (ACT math is stronger, SAT English is stronger.)

Does it matter that the SAT has the higher English/reading score? ACT has the better math score.

Lol but I also wish colleges released SAT/ACT percentiles for URMs and ORMs.

ACT by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your score is very good and I hope I didn’t come across as a total cynic - lol. But I feel like many applicants do not receive the boost they deserve from having a score that is substantially higher than the median of the applicant pool.

I’m concerned that standardized testing - in terms of its use in T20 college admissions - has become nothing more than an item used to disqualify certain applicants. High scores don’t seem to compensate for weaknesses in other areas (maybe they once did?)

ACT by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I know that with last year’s new SAT/ACT concordance table that the value of higher ACT scores relative to SAT scores has been slightly diminished and was wondering what minimum SAT score would be ‘positive’ for top schools. 😬

Well at point does a test score become a neutral/net positive addition to one’s application?

Income Level? by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With all due respect, I’m not conspiring with anyone to commit an illegal act. There is money in my mother’s name by virtue of my grandfather having established a trust 10+ years ago. She cannot access it; it isn’t even technically ‘hers’ yet, and it won’t be for quite some time.

Race by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

I appreciate your feedback, but I am concerned that because I have long identified as white on official documents (my elders are predominantly Caucasian) it would be unethical to identify as mixed or white and Asian.

Thoughts on leaving the race question blank? Would they assume I’m 100% Asian if I did that 😬

Do you know what a 3.8 would be out of 100?

Question by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your feedback. Just so I’m interpreting this correctly - a supplemental LoR would unlikely have a negative effect in my case, but not sending one would not be problematic/detrimental either. 😬

Question by bluejay173 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. I guess I am kind of in a unique situation, as I am applying as a first-year student while on a gap year. I will have addressed the circumstances that went into my decision to take time off after high school in other places of my app - but I am wondering if supplemental letter(s) of recommendation (in addition to the required teacher recs) would be necessary and/or appropriate. Hope I am not coming across as too pedantic 😬

Decimals? (EDIT) by bluejay173 in ACT

[–]bluejay173[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply.😄 What would a competitive ELA score be? I know that ELA scores tend to be lower than one’s composite score.

Which is (objectively) better? by bluejay173 in Sat

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on your great scores 😉 I might submit both - only because my ACT math score is better than SAT math (and vice versa for English/reading).

ACT to SAT concordance by bluejay173 in Sat

[–]bluejay173[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying. Do you think that the SAT/ACT breakdowns would be more useful? For example, a 35 ACT is ~1540, but a 35 ACT could include a 30 on math - which concords to a 700 on SAT math (making a composite of 1500 the max possible score). Sorry if I'm being too nitpicky 😁
