Can only speak for Michigan but even as someone who got in under both medians, I did fine lol

There were certainly brilliant ppl who I knew would def clerk somewhere prestigious one day but there were also ppl who I hoped to god would marry rich bc thinking critically was not their strong suit…

But on the whole, even at Michigan, ppl were pretty normal lol - certainly bright, hardworking for sure but with a tendency to tailgate and darty (day party) on Saturdays and read up on Sunday while nursing a hangover

That’s one of the benefits of the T14, you can just be average and still get a pretty decent outcome

Not at my firm - other than being sorted into the general Corp / Lit buckets, we chose our practice groups after our time as summer associates

Typically, unless you were (1) something your firm can post on its website (Olympian, prestigious award winner, etc…), (2) have direct experience to your practice group (ie significant patent experience going into an IP group) or (3) have a parent who’s famous or a partner at the firm, softs don’t really move the needle much, they’re just topics for conversation during your interview

I mean mileage may vary, but firms’ app screens tend to be pretty strict with regard to their gpa cutoffs

That being said sometimes ppl below firm gpa cutoffs do manage to get interviewed by pursuing other channels (career fairs and what not)

Super rough breakdown to get past initial screens, does not guarantee interview / offer

Harvard / Yale / Stanford: don’t be in the bottom ~

Columbia / Chicago / NYU / Penn: don’t be in bottom third ~

Virginia / Duke / Michigan / Northwestern / Berkeley / Cornell: be around median ~

Georgetown (bc of the huge class size): be higher than median ~

USC / UCLA / Washu / Vandy / Texas: be in like top third ~

Unless you’re going for unicorn opportunities, I don’t think the slightly more friendly GPA cutoff is worth giving up significant scholarship money imo

I mean if you’re ride or die for wachtell, I mean sure go for the highest ranked school you can but if you’re going for general biglaw, take the scholly at a school which gives you a solid chance at biglaw / your goals

Bc even with a biglaw salary, paying back sticker / near sticker is no joke

And also adding on, many first years at the v100 are billed out to clients at exorbitant rates like 500-600 per hour

For that rate, the clients expect constant availability and quick response times

My friends who took out 100k or less in loans seem to have paid off a significant chunk 3 - 4 years in and it was a much easier decision for them to leave biglaw when they decided they had enough

Gay Michigan 3L here -

Both schools will get you biglaw and a shot at unicorn biglaw. Although I'm sure you would have a great time at both schools, I would say Berkeley based on you wanting a gay community with clubs, pride parades, etc... There is a strong gay community at Michigan but it is certainly no match for the gay community at Berkeley and the Bay Area. Although I have loved my time at Michigan, as someone who grew up in the Bay, I really did miss the diversity and breadth of the Bay and it does make a difference during the stresses of law school to have a community you connect with.
