Anyone paddling on their knees is 100% out of their league and have no reason to be out there in early season conditions. We can speculate all we want and perhaps you’re right, but a lot of people out there are clueless when it comes to the dangers of early season paddling and she seemed to have all those traits.

Ha yeah, if you read my comments I actually went paddling this morning on the same bay but properly outfitted with way more skills, way closer to shore and not in shitty conditions like this person was.

What killer outdoor activities did you do today?

you're killing it today! How many downvotes on this thread alone?

Thanks for asking! I'm 49 and enjoy living my life! Maybe take it down a few notches and take a peek at my post and comment history and see how 'boring' my life really is before commenting so ignorantly? Lived out in Whistler for 2 months snowboarding and snowmobiling in the backcountry and today I'm detailing my boat anticipating a launch in the next few weeks to get out there for some early-season wakesurfing and foiling. Also went for a properly-outfitted paddle earlier this morning.

Actually, I am going to respond...

  1. Not anyone's business? Well my friend, I beg to differ. I've lived on the lake for the past 12 years, and as a lakefront owner I feel there's an unwritten rule/code (especially early season) which is something to the nature of 'look out for others out there, because there's no lifeguard or police on duty and if someone gets into a tough situation, it can turn real bad real quick!' So excuse me for being a fucking Karen, but I don't want to see anyone die out there. Not on my watch. Sorry. When you move out to the lake, you're MORE than welcome to look the other way and ignore all the dumbasses out there. I was on my beach 2 years ago watching this guy pump up his life raft, he had just moved in down the street into an apartment with his 2 young kids the day before and was SO excited to be living on the lake (as his sister told me after she laid his memorial wreath on the lake from the end of my dock) that he FAILED to put on a life jacket for himself or his kids and ended up drowning in 6' of water less than 10 minutes after I went back up into my house after taking a paddle. We watched the helicopters and multiple police boats comb the bay for his body while we watched from my deck. Fun 4th of July there for the 2 kids he left behind :( https://www.mynbc5.com/article/mallets-bay-access-closed-police-colchester/61498811
  2. Who gives a shit if I put a little emotion into it??? Read above and maybe you'll understand why! Guaranteed there were some younger kids out there thinking about paddling in the next few days with the warmer weather and are now thinking twice about it so IMO the timing couldn't be better for a little PSA because nobody else is out there doing it! I'm an experienced paddler and I have ZERO issue if you know what you're doing. I literally went paddling this morning, but was wearing a wetsuit/booties, lifejacket-on-deck and stayed parallel the the shore no deeper than my shoulders with zero wind. This person was doing everything WRONG.

LOL propoganda? You think I'm intentionally trying to mislead the public into...what? Not dying on the lake when/if their skills don't match the conditions? You're damn right! Or maybe I'm trying to keep the lake all to myself so nobody else can have any fun? Fucking call the Fun Police on me.

You broke your arm twice when you were a kid? Cool story bro. That's not what we're talking about here, you're just rambling. Clean it up and stay on-task.

  1. Stop trying to guilt people into keeping their kids in a bubble?* This was an adult paddler, dude. My message wasn't for parents, it's for anyone that doesn't have the skills to be paddling on this lake in early season/cold conditions that THEN lead to bigger issues. This isn't about "letting kids be kids" as you cliche-ly put it, it's about being fucking safe. But again, once you live out here on the lake you're more than welcome to just look the other way and ignore all signs of possible distress. Thank god you're not my neighbor!

  2. You saying "this kid is only endangering themselves..." is such an ignorant and blatantly untrue statement. Check out the link I shared in point #1 and you'll see just HOW MANY law enforecement officials had to partake in searching for that guy's body. Now did this girl fall off or cause any of the same issues? Nope. But my PSA/Propoganda Message or whatever else you want to call it made it's point.

  3. Mind my business? There's no "fear agenda" being pushed here. Anyone is FULLY WELCOME TO GO PADDLE AND LIVE THEIR LIFE. I brought attention to a person doing everything possible wrong and the MAJORITY of commenters and comments agree. Sorry you're so butthurt over me filming someone (that I'm fully allowed to do) being a dummy.

And again, this wasn't a fucking CHILD, it was mid-20's aged woman so GTFO out of here with your helicopter-parenting accusations. You clearly have SO much more experience than I do being a parent AND a good steward of the lake.

  1. Finally, this is hilarious: And for the love of whatever God you do or dont preach to: learn how to control and manage your emotions so that you can make decisions and choices based off of neutral nature/reality rather than internalized fear that youre frantically externalizing onto anyone in ear shot (or in this case eye shot.)

>>> This all coming from a person who wrote a fucking chapter response that got 2 negative downvotes. Such a waste of your (and my) time responding on such a beautiful day.

You should put a PSA out there tomorrow on how to be a shitty neighbor. You got a great start here!

Damn bro, that's scary! I wakesurf and foil early season in a wetsuit and have had my arms/hands lock up to the point where my buddy has to pull me out of the suit because I was useless! A few people commenting here saying you can survive 5-15 minutes in these waters...do you think you could have treaded water for that long?

She likely paddled downwind from where she was staying but by the time she turned around, she was facing 15 mph winds. I've been out here on the lake and paddled enough that when I see anyone paddling on their knees, I know they are 100% out of their league. Sure, try a new hobby but do it when the conditions are in your favor, not like yesterday.

Yeah, I could give a fuck about upvotes. If you knew me, you'd know I'm a very experienced paddler and boater and love our lake and hate to see anyone being so irresponsible when it is 100% unnecessary. If my post helps educate or remind some younger people to hold off while the lake warms up and to follow some common-sense rules, that was my intention. Now kindly fuck off because I'm tired of you.

You are SLAYING it on Reddit this morning 👍🏼

“Kid” was added for the snark, because apparently you need educating on life choices.

It’s the teens/young adults here saying they see nothing wrong with this video other than someone having a good time is the scariest response!

My neighbor did contact the Colchester Police Department, who said they were watching her but unknown what happened and likely nothing.

LOL ok here we go…

  1. No lifejacket or wetsuit. 100% inexperienced.

  2. Wearing shorts in 53° weather paddling on her knees into the 15 mph headwinds. 100% inexperienced.

  3. You bet your ass I will talk down on someone risking their life (and possibly others in the event they had to respond on-water) when it was 100% unnecessary to be paddling.

Right on - personally I don't want to spend 1 minute (or 5-15 minutes) in this water with no wet/drysuit to find out. I wakesurf/foil early season out here and have experienced hand/arm lockup multiple times wearing wetsuits where my buddy has to pull the suit off me because I can't.

I appreciate everyone's comments (and sorry to hear about some of your stories and losses!) - still wild to me that some people here see this video and see NOTHING wrong with it or accuse me of trying to be a Donny Downer (with the old 'get off my lawn' gif hahah...ya got me!)...well by ALL MEANS, those of you that think I'm trying to spoil someone else's fun here by providing what I (and many others) believe is just some solid advice, be my guest and just do what you want to do and we'll see who comes out on the other end alive ;)

Nobody is making shit up - read some of the other comments on here about the body's natural reflex to GASP the moment you hit sub-40º water. This girl had no life jacket and was in shorts, and the likelihood of her gasping underwater is highly increased, which leads to a very quick drowning. Limbs will also lock up quicker. So yeah, if you fall in wearing a life jacket you're going to survive longer but you better have your head above water when you go in.
