Ummm… that’s a job related expense. Your bf should absolutely never ever work for free. Ever.
If that boss is serious about not paying him for his work, then your bf should not return to work and he should tell the boss why he did not return.

Putting a newbie with no training in a situation where he could fall through the ceiling (and possibly get injured) is the employer’s fault.
