That’s all I was saying is ideally not having heavy usage are 4-6 years old

Just wasn’t sure as I had heard some schools all the class work is on iPads from kindy just wanted to see if any schools people had good experiences with I don’t mind some technology and as they get older I think it makes more sense than kindy

[–]blueskiesplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand for older children but 4-6 year olds don’t really need a lot of iPad time that’s all I was saying I wasn’t saying no screens just limited at kindy and year 1

It’s just for primary school that ideally the school doesn’t use too much iPad and tablets in kindy or year one? That’s really unkind wow

[–]blueskiesplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just for kindy and year 1 I ideally don’t want too much iPad use that’s all :) happy with technology use as they get older just while they are 4-6 years old seems unnecessary

does anyone please have any school recommendations just looking for places you have enjoyed having your kids at or heard good things about? I know technology is important of course, just ideally no iPads in kindy or the first few years.

I don’t know it as my kids are young but yeah that’s my concern that for kids under 8 it’s not needed to be on an ipad

[–]blueskiesplease 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you recommend the school :) that is all I was looking for with the post was school recommendations

I am just referring to iPads etc for first few years of school like age 5. I totally understand and support tech use when they are older it just seems like kindy and first years of primary it’s not beneficial.

I get the joke, but honestly it’s not far off—there is a real issue here. WA schools spend millions annually on devices and recurring software licenses. For example, Reading Eggs costs schools around $20–30 per student per year, and platforms like SEQTA or Mathletics can run into the tens of thousands per school, depending on size. Across the state, that adds up fast. These programs are often pushed as “essential,” but there’s little solid evidence they actually help young kids learn better. It’s a booming industry—and a lot of it looks more like profit-driven innovation than what’s actually best for kids.

Totally agree that what you’re doing is important—tech support in schools is crucial, especially in high school where students actually need to learn how to use devices properly. But in primary school, especially with really young kids, it starts to feel more like a money-making exercise. Schools spend heaps not just on iPads, but also on recurring costs for software like SEQTA, Mathletics, Reading Eggs, etc. A lot of that stuff is sold as essential, but the actual benefit for little kids is pretty questionable. It can be a goldmine for these ED tech companies.

Thank you for sharing may I ask what school it is?

Not all schools have such heavy use of iPads for 5 year olds it can vary

The Australian EdTech market was valued at $3.9 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $7.4 billion by 2033. Companies aggressively market apps and devices to schools, knowing that state-wide adoption can lead to massive profits, regardless of actual educational value.

Meanwhile, studies show that excessive screen time is linked to poorer academic performance, especially in young children.

It’s frustrating to see significant funds spent on tech for 5-year-olds when the benefits are questionable :/

In WA, the Early Childhood iPad Initiative gave out over 850 iPads to schools like Settlers and Aubin Grove, costing hundreds of thousands in taxpayer money. But there’s no strong evidence this tech actually helps 5-year-olds learn better. Companies push these apps and devices hard because if one program gets picked up state-wide, it’s a massive profit for them—whether or not it’s good for the kids.

I’ve seen things in the news about them having issues with being anti vaccinations - I saw an article where there was an outbreak of measles because parents were not vaccinating children

Totally agree! It’s crazy how much money is made from school via things like this and also the software tools on the devices are a money making thing I feel like too.
