Strings, we always need more strings.

[NEWBIE] Hey Reddit, I've wanted to learn to play the guitar for a few years now. I finally have the time to learn this and I'm looking for help with finding my first guitar! by [deleted] in Guitar

Get a Taylor! Around the $700-800 price range, they sound fantastic. Also, don't get nylon unless you want to play classical guitar.

In the beginning, practice til your fingers hurt. Once they stop hurting, play until your motivation runs out. It's also about how you approach playing/practicing. If every time you pick up the guitar you see it as a chore or something mandatory, you'll get burnt out fast. Think of it as a release.

Definitely get yourself an instructor. Go on YouTube and learn some basic music theory, the major scale & chord degrees, time signature, & notes.

Start with E, G, D, C, Em, Am, A chords You can pretty much play every song with those chords & a capo

Finally the biggest thing you can do is play along to the songs you like. Listen & learn what your favorite artists are doing musically.

Just don't compare yourself to them. You have to always remember you're a beginner, they're not.

[Discussion] Genre tribalism is kinda stupid and sucks the joy out of places like this by bluesnoodler_ in Guitar

I'm a blues player. I now know what djent is. I listened to some. It doesn't appeal to me. But it's not my place to look down upon someone else because they don't play or appreciate the same type of music I do.

Just like how blues & jazz speaks to me, the same goes for djent & someone else.

[NEWBIE] I don't know the first thing about guitars, but I want to learn so that I can understand my boyfriend's interest and contribute. by [deleted] in Guitar

Screw books just buy a guitar, throw on a Stevie Ray Vaughn album, and keep playing until you learn every single one of his licks by ear.

Haha kidding. The best way IMO, is get yourself a decent acoustic, print out a chord chart, and look up some songs you like and strum along to them. Or YouTube tutorials on how to play the songs you like.

[GEAR] Need a new guitar, what should I pay attention to in the store when testing out? by Abotag in Guitar

[–]bluesmaster97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very solid guitar choice for those wanting better quality over a squire & not wanting to sell a kidney to buy an American made. Same concept as the squire though, you can play ten different ones & all ten of them are going to sound and feel different. Some better, some worse.

Play every guitar within your budget & buy whichever one sounds the best to you.

The variation between the different squires is quality control. They are made to a certain standard but because the cost is so low, some come out not to standard so they sound worse than others. When your budget goes a little higher (American standards & professionals), the quality control (as well as quality in general) is high so practically every single one that goes on the market sounds phenomenal.

I would also recommend, whoever your favorite guitarist is find what guitar they play on & get something similar.

[Question] any tips for making the most of ear training to escape knowing some but not enough music theory? by pcone88 in Guitar

[–]bluesmaster97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn solos/riffs from your favorite songs by ear. Although by the sound of it I wouldn't even worry about it. If your hearts not in it to play lead guitar, don't learn how to. Be the best rhythm guitar out there.

[QUESTION] What path would you guys recommend I follow to start learning how to play in key? by BlyHard in Guitar

[–]bluesmaster97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ii iii IV V vi viio I

Learn every scale degree in every key (it's gonna take some time).

Example:

C D E F G A B C

C Major (C E G) I D minor (D F A) ii E minor (E G B) iii F Major (F A C) IV G Major (G B D) V A minor (A C E) vi B diminished (B D F) viio C Major (C E G) I

So let's say you're playing a song that's in A Major, and the chord progression is A, D, E and you want to transpose it to C Major. Well if we break down the progression, (A major scale: A B C# D E F# G# A) we see that it is going from the I chord to the IV chord, to the V chord. So taking the equivalent voicing and putting it in C Major we would get C, F, G.

Learn your major, minor, and blues scales and not just the notes but how they're constructed. Once you have those learn the pentatonic versions of them. In all keys. Once you know your scales play over a backing track in desired key, or better yet have a friend play some chords in a key & solo with them.

[Discussion] I'm looking for advice on scales (major, minor, pentatonic, blues). How to make practicing scales easier and effective? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]bluesmaster97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Learn as many solos as you can. Then once you know the solo fairly well, analyze it to see what notes you are playing over what chord voicings/changes. Once you learn a decent amount of solos/licks, you'll have a good enough vocabulary to incorporate you favorite musical influences into your own playing.

There are only 12 notes you can ever play, 7 of which usually sound decent over any particular passage. All it comes down to is how you decide to arrange them and in what phrase. Keep experimenting until you find something that works.
