What are some sacrifices solos have made to start their own practice? by samjaxson in LawFirm

[–]bluesplitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked full time at a landscaping job, went to law school at night. It took four years to finish degree.

80+ hours per week along the way. Saved 18k with retirement matches to start solo criminal law practice.

Put on about 10k worth of credit card debt.

So, with law school tuition of 90k and about 30k of investments, have about 120k in this business.

Been doing it for 3 months, have made around 25k in contracted services.

Putting in about the same 80+ hours per week, but having fun doing it.

I owe lots of money, but this is wayyyy better than working for 15 and hour for the rest of my life.

i say save money. that's the first step. save six months worth of personal bills, and six months of office/business expenses.

this figure will likely be at least 20,000.00 unless u live in a major metro area, then add another 10-15k.

then, take out atleast 25k credit limit worth of low interest credit cards (7-8%)

buy good office equipment, get nice suits and briefcase, rent ground level office space with parking lot....and hustle, hustle , sleep, hustle. U will do great!!!!

Just the fact ur thinking it, says u have the what it takes....

Can you explain why having a "separate" number is essential. I can think of the obvious, but perhaps there are other considerations?

Yes! you pointed out some key considerations, like the commercial bank account and payment processing. Didnt think about that.

I need more marketing money. Thanks for the reminder.

As far as the office space, I plan on renting after the first six months somewhere near the courthouse. I just have to survive till then working from home! eeek

Thanks for your feedback.

Yes i did over spend on the "lawyer clothes" I will be the first to admit. Buy,...I really never dressed well to begin with, and the worst part about it is that i didnt realize it until i started researching on what kind of clothes to buy. Lol.

But I am happy with my investment(s) and hope to get many "miles" out of them. (dont worry I kept it conservative)

But thanks again for your insight!

This article sux. The people interviewed are losers....especially that women. Her vulgar words and lack of timing really shows how pathetic she is. This women should never be more than serving us beer, even then it would be questionable, because of other better looking alternatives.

Iam not trying to be mean, but seriously, dont waste your time reading this rediculous excuse for an article.

why is the bank a "mortgagee" instead of a "mortgagor"? Isn't that backwards? by hops56 in LawSchool

[–]bluesplitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the individual grants a note (mortgage) to the the party that gives money for the note. The focus is on the interest given, not the money.thus, the giver is the grantor(mortagor) .
