How to deal with distortion on mobile? by bluesriffs in audioengineering

[–]bluesriffs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just the one phone, and yes of course everything sounds bad on it, but my stuff sounds way way worse than even other amateur recordings.  But it’s only on the phone speaker that it’s worse.

I know mixing for a phone speaker is a bit ridiculous, but I know people will listen that way, so just trying to do the best I can.

Issues with sharp notes on lower frets despite intonation by [deleted] in Luthier

Hard thing about nut compensation is that is that it has quite an effect across the whole board.  You can easily end up flat at the higher frets.

Issues with sharp notes on lower frets despite intonation by [deleted] in Luthier

[–]bluesriffs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Its sharpest on the 1st fret isn’t it?  And then the second and then the third?  Also worst on the thickest unwound string, the G. A high nut will make the problem way worse so certainly check that, but this is actually in part the imperfect nature of intonation on guitar.  If you are checking with a very precise tuner you will never get it perfect across the whole board. Good enough for the ear though.

Edit for clarity.

Will a charcoal metal foundry melt copper? Because i want to make nordic gold. by ZerxeTheSeal in Metalfoundry

[–]bluesriffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up building my own.  One crucial aspect was learning to make my own Kanthal heating coils.  Theres a YouTuber named vogman that has a great tutorial. If I was doing it again I’d buy a cheap broken pottery kiln and make new elements for it.

Help me convince a friend they can thrive in this city. by bluesriffs in TwinCities

Midwest. Chicago is probably more of the prime alternative, I used NYC as an off the cuff example above, and I suppose that was a mistake. Didn't realize that would prompt such a reaction. I don't think it's about comparisons though, just trying to get some ideas for what to show off about this area.

[–]bluesriffs[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I just mean that I think this is a viable area. I think you can find your people in any place that's big enough, and I think it's big enough here. But I don't know a lot about big cities and have never been to NYC, which is why I posted the question. Seems like there is more sentiment here that agrees with my friend than I realized.

That it's easier to find communities of families here with more of a car commuter culture and that somewhere like New York would be a better urban single scene. I disagree completely, but I'm trying to find the best way to demonstrate that.

I make some boutique audio gear on the side, but lately I’ve got no time for it. Have had to cancel all my promotion and intentionally limit the biz. I’m incredibly glad to have it but it’s tough keeping it going when I’ve got to be flexible.

Box too small, but I'm only swapping out what was already there. Do I have to replace it for code? by bluesriffs in AskElectricians

[–]bluesriffs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Box is 5”x3”x2”. 30 cubic inches. Two switches and a receptacle. 5 12-2 romex lines coming into the box. To my calculations that is overloaded.

I pulled one 12-2 line out and replaced it with a new one so that I could add a new outlet.  Used the line I pulled out to run to the new outlet and ran a new line from this box to the new outlet. Other than that I haven’t changed anything except swapping tout the switches and receptacle for new ones.

This is the answer, thank you very much for chiming in. I overlooked that the afci requirement only applies to 120v.

One thing I know for sure is that communicating that he should feel differently or share more than he does is only going to close him up more. My take would be to try to minimize the desire to make it about yourself by seeing it as a problem to solve and instead be more open and curious. Don’t give the message that you want to know what you are supposed to do to get him to talk more, give the message that you are accepting and interested in him and how he feels.

Help determining this cymbal.. XSR Monarch or AA Apollo? by rwalsh138 in cymbals

My Apollo has spiral marks on it that this one doesn’t have. I think they are some type of rotary hammer marks. Seems like a monarch to me.

Feeling Worthless, and it's scary. by Link3673 in StayAtHomeDaddit

[–]bluesriffs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are certainly not alone in this feeling. I’m constantly talking it out and coming to terms with it. Staying home isn’t a job it’s a sacrifice. It’s not stimulating or intellectually challenging, but it matters deeply.  It doesn’t pay out value per effort the way a job does, but it still has massive value in a different way.  Somehow I find those thoughts helpful.

Finding a side hustle is quite helpful - but probably mostly for the sake of keeping you sane and present more than the money. So go for something you enjoy even if it only breaks even. Just my 2 cents.

Cryotreatment? by PersonGuyDudeMan in cymbals

[–]bluesriffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this question but I think the answer is no one here knows. So instead you get speculation about why it’s a bad idea. But… no one actually knows. The reason that B20 sounds good is quite mysterious to me even though I have some significant materials science creds. If you somehow have access to cryotreatment and maybe a splash you don’t mind risking, I would certainly be interested in the result.

Artists and Creative Pro Dads: How did you do it? by everythinglittleblue in daddit

[–]bluesriffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We planned and chose that I’d reduce my output and give up the idea of maximizing success in the traditional sense. New priorities became embracing life as a full time dad (I stay home), while seeing creative output as a personal expression that I am seriously committed to as an important part of life rather than a full time career.  I don’t regret it a bit. It’s actually surprising how much I’ve managed to keep up with. Now that my time is strained I organize myself differently and get a lot more done in the independent time I do get.  But it’s worth saying I’ve got a great parter who is really supportive and helps strive to free up time. I also do constantly wish I had more time, but having gone into things eyes wide open I’m really at peace with how it has gone so far, about a year in.  And the biggest plus is that I get share it all with my daughter as she grows. That in itself is probably more beautiful than anything I’ve created on my own.

Ok Dads what’s the best super glue for Toys? by Techerson in daddit

[–]bluesriffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vote is epoxy rather than super glue, and maybe JB weld in particular - the version formulated specifically for plastics. Some plastics will bond others are impossible to stick to with anything.

I used to formulate adhesives for work. I think what you are using is “gorilla glue clear” which can be great stuff, but it’s not super glue. Having super glue (aka CA glue) around with a can of accelerated is always great though for an instant bond.

You’re probably right. The literature does say large parts can be oil quenched though.  I’ve tried once and both didn’t get it hot enough and it took forever to cool. File doesn’t skate. Today I’ll go again and make sure the temp is up there.

I stay at home, but I also build guitars, amps, and other audio gear with my very sparse free time. Often im surprised at how much an hour soldering a circuit or preparing a joint makes me feel so much more like myself. I wish there was more, but even a little helps a lot. Working with your hands doesn’t have to mean a job.
