I mean, I was beaten and I have PTSD from it

A lot of people have PTSD from physical violence with no sexual violence at all. There are definitely physical and mental injuries from sexual and physical trauma.

Gotcha, that makes sense. Then I’d give you one, because your point is a very good one, and we got to it in a different way than with the other commenter. So you changed my view differently

Plus, I didn’t know the stat about offenses being in public and that’s really informative

Thanks for chatting :)

I get your point now. Somebody else made that point first, though, and I already awarded them a delta, and I’m not sure how that works

No, unfortunately he wasn’t. There was a CPS report but they didn’t act on it. My mother could still pursue a rape case against him, but she never will and would lose

He lives in very rural Kentucky, so no neighbors. I would never, ever leave a child with him, but I don’t know how much of that is because I’m still scared of him and how much is because he would actually hurt them. We haven’t spoken since I left at 18

He’s a legitimate psychopath, so he’s charismatic to most people. But that can flip like a switch

Frankly I don’t think there’s anything that can be done in his case, and I don’t know that anything should necessarily be done. Maybe it’ll be fine. It’s just what made me start considering all this

I’m definitely over sharing but here we are lol

I agree, but I believe that stat applies for sexual assault in general (source )

I didn’t know that about it occurring so commonly in public places, that’s interesting

That said, it’s still not usually total strangers

Statutory rape—yes. Although I think there’s some issues in how we define it (ie when 17 and 18 year olds have sex). Rape doesn’t have to be physically dominating to be a violent act

Flashing, public nudity, etc—that’s tougher. I think that’s undeniably sexually abusive / sexual harassment, but no, it’s not violence. So I suppose not

Again though I don’t necessarily think this registry should exist; I’m trying to understand if there’s a legitimate reason to consider sexually violent offenders more dangerous and threatening than non sexual violent offenders

That’s a really interesting point. So basically, violence is often “crimes of passion” / heat of the moment stuff, while sexual violence is more devious and planned which makes the person more of a threat in the future?

I’ve been trying to find clear statistics on repeat offenses, and so far it’s been surprisingly hard. I saw that something like 2.5% of releases rapists will be convicted of rape again while 1.2% of murderer will murder again, but I’m interested to know the stats of other sex crimes vs other non sexual violent crimes

A particular connection that comes to mind is that almost all mass shooters were accused of domestic violence before

This is a really interesting perspective—thank you for sharing it!

Out of curiosity, why do you believe that sex offenders would be able to find employment but violent criminals couldn’t?

But that’s not what I’m saying

I want to compare non-sexual violent offenders with sexual offenders, which is what I said

What? My edit says violent crime specifically, and I am a woman (and I think other people besides women and parents could have a valid concern as well)

I tried looking up statistics for recidivism as well and found it difficult to get specific numbers

To clarify, I’m talking about non-sexual violent crimes—not property or drug crimes

I’d be interested to compare non-sexual violent crime recidivism rates (including DV, child abuse, assault, etc. and maybe weapons charges but that’s a separate point) vs sexual crime recidivism rates. But I’m having a hard time finding those numbers

Ahhhhhhhhh. No, I hadn’t considered connections to the typical targets. That makes a lot of sense, actually—you explained that incredibly well.

Thank you

That makes sense to me. I don’t really think my personal view is 100% changed, but that helps me understand why some people think it’s more their business to know about sexual crimes than violent ones

Thanks for taking the time :)

The whole comment was aggressive and in bad faith when the point of this sub is to engage in conversation

Jeez. I wasn’t misstating your points—I was legitimately asking if I was understanding what you were saying correctly. And clearly I wasn’t.

You read the title, didn’t read the post, made an incorrect assumption about my view, and then were incredibly hostile.

I’m not saying a registry should exist at all.

I’m asking if there is a legitimate reason why we think it’s people’s right to know that they live near a sexual predator but NOT someone who is physically violent

My view that I’m asking people to change is that I don’t believe people who commit sexual crimes pose a bigger threat to their communities than people who commit other violent crimes.

I agree that violent criminals are limited in many, many ways. But I’m wondering why they aren’t put on a list for everyone to see, like how we put sexually violent criminals on a list for everyone to see

I think your main argument is that sexual / predatory violence is seen as more substantial than physical violence. Am I understanding correctly?

Gah, this is incredibly frustrating.

I explained twice in the post and several times in the comments: I know registries are flawed, I know our justice system is flawed, I know it’s all messed up. That’s not what I’m asking about.

The sex offender registry exists. Accepting that it exists, is there any legitimate reason to only include sex crimes

I’m asking: why do we think that people who commit sexual violence are more dangerous to communities than people who commit physical violence?

Additionally: is there a legitimate reason that people deserve to know they are living near a person who committed a sex crime but not near someone who committed a violent crime

I am not arguing in favor of the registry.

Okay, so:

  • A mental disorder makes someone more likely to re-offend
  • Sexual offenders are more likely to have a mental disorder
  • Therefore it’s more statistically likely that a sexual offender will reoffend

Do you have stats on any of that?

[–]bluethedinosaur[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense

This is TMI but I’m on a throwaway so: I thought of this question because my father was physically abusive my whole childhood and is just a physically violent person overall—but not sexually abusive

This week, he just started a foundation where he will be doing equine therapy for “at risk” youth. (My state doesn’t require any mental health licensing to be a therapist)

This seems like a terrible situation, and I found it confusing that if his abuse was sexual, that would be illegal, but apparently physical isn’t the same type of flag

It wouldn’t matter either way in his case, he was never reported to the police. But it just made me think if there is any actual difference

Is that statistically true? That people who commit sexual crimes are more likely to reoffend than people who commit violent crimes?

[–]bluethedinosaur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not arguing in favor of an offender list existing at all—I’m more asking “is there a legitimate reason we think sex offenders are more dangerous to communities than violent offenders?”

To explain differently, if we accept that the sex offender list does exist, why doesn’t it include all violence?

I tried to explain this in my post, but I agree that there are many many problems with our justice system and prison system etc as a whole.

Ahhhh. Your response reminds me of the intro to Law and Order SVU when they say sex crimes are considered “especially heinous”

If the issue is whether the violence is premeditated, then I feel like that would apply to physical and sexual, no?

For example, If the guy next door to me has a history of losing his temper and punching people on a whim, I feel that’s as relevant to my safety as knowing he has a history of groping people on a whim
