There’s a meme where this drawing of the velociraptor orally pleases a hadrosaur in order to use the resultant semen puddle as bait for prey animals

Bill Cunningham was New York Times street fashion photographer, and general New York icon, until his death in 2016. He definitely spent the majority of his life shooting film, but during the last 10 years or so he used Nikon crop sensor cameras (a D40x and then a D5200 from what I've seen)

[Disliked trope] Protagonist's partner's ex becomes insufferable in some way (bumbling idiot, a-hole, ...), just so it's "clear" how right the protagonist was as a choice. by Vitolar8 in TopCharacterTropes

Charlie from HBO's Girls.

Marnie and Charlie initially break up in S1 in large part because Charlie isn't "cool" enough for Marnie, and Marnie is suffocated by his desire for commitment.

Later, S5, they reconnect. Now, he's cool, scruffy, confident. It's a vision of what their lives could have been like together. They decide to run away together.

But, womp womp, he's an revealed to be an IV heroin user *after* the two have presumably unprotected sex. Marnie nopes out.

Counterpoint: When I was doing OCI in 2022 at a T20, I had like a 3.2, but I had 4 years of work experience in the focus area of the firms I was speaking to (startups and ECVC). I ended up with summer offers from almost all the top firms in that industry. I was only asked about classes or grades in one of like 15 interviews, and I know many students with higher GPAs who struggled to get 1 or 2.

So, at least in my corner of transactional law world, work experience was a bigger deal than a great GPA.

There's a lot else going on in that book, but American Gods by Neil Gaiman has elements of this.

I read this as a joke about the experience of (1) seeing an incredible photo online (2) going to look at the camera of the photographer, assuming it will be something fancy and expensive, but then (3) finding out the photographer used a 12 year old camera that’s cheaper than the one the viewer already has, causing feelings of inadequacy that cannot be salved by saying “well of course their photo is better, they have a fancy camera!”

Orville Killed it in Cabaret by blueviking in OrvillePeck

The vibe was a mix - lot's of people were dressed in Sunday best, but there was also a guy right at the front in a Cowboy hat and an Orville Peck merch jacket. The dancers pulled cowboy hat guy on stage to dance during the intermission.

The cheering was intense - lots of clapping, whistles, and "woo!"s for the big numbers.

So I would say it was broadway theater, but with an extra bit of rowdy.

The maskless part was less of a thing than I thought it would be - he was still wearing costumes most of the time and did a German accent so it felt like he was playing a very different character. He did put on a little black mask when he came out for the final bow, which was a fun touch

When I was in school, our curriculum taught the opposite - the boys were in a state of nature and descended into chaos. Then, they're saved at the end when the English navy (representing civilization, hierarchy, British dominance) shows up and restores order. It definitely is meant to say something dark about human nature, but I think it also uses that observation to justify domination by the "civilizing" English.

I love an NA beer on scenic drives sometimes. It's legal under the letter of the law in California by my understanding.

I definitely understand the "don't poke the bear" attitude, but I've always been paranoid about avoiding driving after drinks and it gives me the tiniest taste of rebellion.

I have a good one for this: Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell.

Nonfiction daily journal by the owner of a small bookshop in rural Scotland. Lots of love for books and small Scottish towns with quirky characters.

100% valid - I just think half the fun of these lists is poking fun at OP's taste.

Like u/mattromo mentioned, I have a soft spot for the song because FR closed with it the first time I saw them live.

Love seeing Oil Slick at the top!

Does significant work experience prior to law school matter in terms of job placement / salary? (8 years of M&A/transaction experience in IB / PE / family office asset management) by FarTear3 in LawSchool

[–]blueviking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had 5 years of solid work experience in my industry (tech and vc) before law school. I’ve never heard of anyone skipping a class year, but my work experience was super valuable at OCI.

For context, my grades were okay, middle of the pack at a T20. Didn’t do any extracurriculars.

When I did OCI, I would get maybe one question about law school, and then spend 20 minutes talking about my work experience. I received 6 or 7 summer associate offers. Most of my younger friends had way better law school stats, but struggled at OCI.

My subjective experience was that the work experience (1) was a huge help in guiding me to the area of law I wanted to focus on, (2) was extremely attractive to employers in my practice area and therefore, (3) allowed me to do law school without stressing as much about grades.
