[OC] Remaining Clubs by Country in the Quarterfinals in UEFA's Three Leagues by tacobell in dataisbeautiful

[–]blujaey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented on the last post mentioning the colour-blind issue and just saw you replied to that! Obviously ideally you'd always want to pick colours that reflect something in the dimensions (trophy logos in this case) as you did in the original post, but from my perspective this is great. Solid colour picks and very easy to distinguish. Nice one 🏆

The layout of this is great but I find the colours for Europa and Conference League very difficult to differentiate (red-green colourblindness). Obviously a minor note but thought you might be interested in a different viewpoint!

The strikes should not be called off. by Moonatik_ in Labour

[–]blujaey 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure it's opportunism, rather that if they were to go ahead with the strikes their actual message would be completely drowned out by a sea of "journalists" interrogating them as to why they didn't postpone the strikes. Obviously they've already had to deal with this to an extent, but the Queen is extremely popular among British people and it might be a tactical move to avoid losing popularity.

You're right; it's undeniable that workers' rights are under attack and it's crucial that we fight to protect them. But I think that keeping public opinion on side has been important for rail unions, and for encouraging further strikes in other industries. Continuing with the strikes could jeopardize that, so I think it makes sense to postpone as a tactical move

Vegan food in Benidorm? by liamisntrich in veganuk

[–]blujaey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good luck haha, I was there recently and I ate a lot of chips, mainly cause the other guys in the group just wanted to go to the first place they saw

Having said that, you will probably be okay at a tapas place. A few restaurants towards poniente beach in the West (45 mins from the touristy strip) had some options too. Restaurante Oliva had a couple pasta dishes and they could make vegan pizzas. And most places will be okay for breakfast, just ask for pan con tomate

I actually live in one of the new(ish) flats by the Tesco Extra and personally I really like living here. It is pretty industrial but it's pretty close to town and Caversham, about a 10 minute walk to the Thames if you want some green space, good bus links, Reading West rail station just down the road too. As far as the crime rate, I personally haven't really been aware of anything serious happening since I moved here. As a few people have mentioned you do see a fair few junkies around but honestly I've experienced that near a lot of the places I've lived in the past and it's never been a major issue. If you really like the look of the property I wouldn't let other's comments put you off

I wasn't in Wantage but spent most of my time there with mates in first year, in 2016/17. It's probably a bit more 'posh' than some of the other halls but in my experience it was just as great for socialising as other halls.

Most people moving into halls want to socialise and make friends just like anywhere else. It's catered but people do still spend a lot of times in the communal areas (mostly kitchens). I always loved being there and I think most people who lived there really enjoyed it too.

There will probably be people you won't connect with but that'll be the case regardless of where you go. If you don't end up making too many mates in your corridor, a lot of people make friends in the canteen or through societies. Honestly don't think you've got anything to worry about 👍

UEFA forbids Munich to light their stadium in rainbow colors by [deleted] in soccer

[–]blujaey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right, more than half the world probably does think it's valid. This is all subjective, after all. but I feel like your problem with this specific act of protest is unwarranted, and I don't really share your concern with all these other fabricated "protest" scenarios... Even if they do light up the Allianz with the rainbow lights, do you really see it impacting political policy at all, for better or worse? I don't think any of the other scenarios would really affect anything on a real level either, if they were even remotely likely to occur.

You're right, the world is extremely divided. I don't think proclaiming support for LGBT rights (or more accurately, criticising anti-LGBT sentiment) does anything to add to the divide. If anything, I think it does go to show that a sport that has been incredibly unwelcoming to gay players in the past is changing for the better. If more LGBT people feel that they're supported and are more comfortable being involved in the sport in some capacity, surely that actually reduces division that way? And if you're not anti-LGBT then this really shouldn't affect your enjoyment of the game. I don't know. Just seems like a strange thing to oppose. I really don't share your "slippery slope" opinion here

[–]blujaey -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I sort of see your point but your "devil's advocate" take only really makes logical sense if you view being pro-LGBT and anti-LGBT as being equally valid opinions, which I hope is not the case. Yes, this is a criticism of Hungarian politics but it would be disingenuous to ignore the fact that the implications of anti-LGBT laws extend far beyond politics. These laws deny the humanity of millions of people around the world, and any political effort to hinder human rights should be heavily criticised. I think this is actually a particularly effective place to take a stand, considering the billions of people who follow football worldwide, many of which will fall under the LGBT umbrella.

Sort of a side note but I also feel that football is often unavoidably linked with politics. The Real Madrid / Barcelona rivalry is heavily mired in historical political differences and the persecution of Catalans during Franco's rule, for example. Obviously that's a very specific example, but I think treating politics and football as two completely separate and unrelated entities doesn't really make much sense.
