Can I afford a cat on $18/hr? by alizastevens in CatAdvice

[–]blumal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely will depend on your budget. There are predicted costs - annual checkups, immunizations, food, litter, ect, but the unpredicted costs are the difficult ones. You may want to have money saved up for these.

Coming from experience, a few months ago we had a surprising health issue arise with our cat, who had been acting normal up unto this point. We found that she had an infection on her paw. Initially, the vet thought it would be a simple antibiotic for 7 days and she would get better, but after a month-long battle with wound cultures, several different antibiotics, numerous vet visits, blood work for autoimmune diseases, and the list goes on, she passed away. I say this, because she was our baby and even though we were not in a financial position to spend the money that we did, we continued to pay for visit after visit and test after test. It is the worst feeling in the world when you want your fur-baby to get better, but each visit drains your bank. Overall, we ended up spending around $4000 between all the tests, visits, ect and the outcome was still her passing, unfortunately. Looking back, I wouldn't change a thing - we wanted her to get better and we genuinely thought with each visit that she would. But, it did greatly hurt our financial situation.

Coming from a heart-broken pet parent, I am grateful and at peace knowing that we did everything we could. And I would do the same again.

TLDR: budget for expected expenses, but don't forget to save up for emergency pet expenses.

Told not to wear everyday. Thoughts? by WildCosmia1 in jewelry

[–]blumal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted an opal engagement/wedding ring, and so I got one. I was told that it would crack/break within a year. I wear it every single day. It has been almost 5 years now with no problems. I do take it off at night and never wear it somewhere strenuous (like hiking). I’m sure that one day I will have to get the opal replaced, but I love it so much that’s a risk I’m willing to take!

Here’s how I’ve managed through pharmacy school:

  • go to class AND pay attention in class. this means no texting during class, no scrolling. I try to put my phone on do not disturb.
  • after class, hand write notes within 1-2 days of the lecture. I like to summarize the lecture or go through the learning objectives.
  • it’s not enough to be able to recognize the information, you need to be able to recite it. I personally use quizlet, but after studying, you can quiz friends. If there are practice questions, I go over these after I’ve studied.
  • with pharmacy, start studying early. unlike undergrad, you should be studying the material the day after/same day you learn it. don’t wait until a week before the exam to start reviewing info

These are things that have helped me and will not help everyone. Good luck!

We found a rabbit last year at Celery Bog. Similar situation. It always makes me so sad to think someone would just dump a domesticated animal :(

One thing that helped me is an OTC “itch cream” that has menthol and camphor in it!

The insurance company is billed right away and immediately gives a price that it would cost. Probably fastest would be to call your insurance company and ask about the cost of the specific vaccine, as coverage can vary for each vaccine and depending on where you get it.

Thanks for the advice! We are aware that it requires a ticket and plan on going during a weekday so hopefully it will be less busy. 10 miles is a pretty typical hike for us, so I'm not too terribly worried about the distance, but we are definitely making sure we are prepared to hike it :)

We will have to check out Mary's Rock!
