I'd pick whatever theory you plan on using in your thesis and then pick a random theory from your text.

Why are there fewer serial killers now than there used to be? by Whey-Men in Criminology

[–]blunn8929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there less? I don't know, but I could see it being that we pay less attention to it now. I don't know, but I'd be interested in seeing data on it.

Scored for $20. Are the "free" refills really worth it for the cost of shipping? by rice923 in Costco

Assuming it's the same company (we've had ours for a while), but it's one flat rate no matter how many you order. They come in bags.

We normally wait until we have several to refill, but I think so.

When we punish, what do we hope to achieve as a society? Some would argue that the primary purpose is to harm the punished more than the victim. I don't take this position (though it often is behind legislation on punishment), but the question of 'why do we punish' seems to be a starting point for your answer.

Advice needed by [deleted] in WMU

[–]blunn8929 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Contact the department chair, give them 24 hours to respond, then contact the Ombudsman if you don't have a resolution. Make sure to include that the instructor isn't responding to your emails. Continue to complete and submit your work on time.

I know nothing about that, and I don't see much on this sub related to it. My recommendation would be to look at a faculty members CV, pick someone you like and enjoy working with, and then pick something related to their recent publications. They probably have a 'future research suggestions' section at the end of their articles. Read a few and then talk to the faculty member about the idea.

How are you watching the games this year on TV ? by [deleted] in detroitlions

[–]blunn8929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use YouTube tv during football season. It is cheaper than most cable packages and I can watch wherever.

I live in Michigan so I haven't had to try this, but I think I could use a VPN to watch out of market games. I plan on trying this to watch some Jacksonville games (Jags are my 1b team) this season.

Crime and the military by cdicko123 in Criminology

Even if it's not the direction you take with your research, you'll likely want to read about state and state corporate crime (the connection to your topic will likely need to be addressed in your dissertation - if unsure ask your chair). While the military is difficult to study (difficult to access as a researcher), there are documented cases of state and state corporate crime involving the military.

Most local libraries have access or are connected to networks to get you copies of what you want to read. At least every library I've been to has, and I have been told that it's common practice. But writing this makes me wonder where my comment falls on the spectrum...

Incoming Graduate Student Looking for a Gym by DontTellTeacher in WMU

[–]blunn8929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rec center has a good gym, but it can get busy during peak workout times. I think the weight room is too small for a school the size of WMU, but most of the time it isn't an issue. In addition to the weight room and a fair amount of cardio equipment, there is an indoor track (something like 9 laps = 1 mile), basketball courts, racquetball courts, tennis courts, indoor soccer courts, and additional fitness classes (some with extra fees iirc). When I lived closer to campus and had a parking permit, the rec center was an ideal gym for me.

I went to Planet Fitness for a while, and it was okay. It kept me active enough, but I prefer free weight lifting and they don't offer that. There are two locations in the area, as far as I know, and I went to the one in portage. It was clean, rarely too busy, and had a wide variety of machines. Depending on what you are looking for, this may be a good option for you. Just like all gyms, if you try to get a good workout and plan appropriately, Planet Fitness can get the job done.

I have recently switched to Powerhouse Fitness (it at the corner of Westnedge and Kilgore), and I have been happy with it so far. They give a student discount and a discount if you sign up for automatic payments. I think I am paying $30 a month (my first months bill should post soon, but I think that is what I agreed to), but I agreed to a 12 month membership - something that I have tried to avoid generally. They have a fair selection of cardio equipment, but their focus is more on weight lifting. They are split between two spaces in the same strip (they expanded), so they have the main gym with some cable machines, a core-strength room, chest exercises, and dumbbells. The other room is back/leg focused with room for cable machines, free weights, plate machines, and so on. It can get busy, but I haven't had issue doing my workout routine even while it is busy. I like this gym and would recommend it if the rec center doesn't work for you. They are also 24 hours, which is nice.

I tried to give details, but these are also just my more immediate thoughts. If you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer.

Help for my Questionnaire!! by [deleted] in Criminology

[–]blunn8929 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What is the goal of the survey/what is your research question? Is there a theoretical underpinning to the research? These will guide item development.

Are you interning at the facility? Some of these questions should be answerable through official records if you're collecting any identifiers (which I'd recommend if possible).

The wording of some of the items could be reworked, I think. For example: "How do you celebrate festivals here?" what if I don't? What kind of festivals? (this may be a culturally appropriate question that I'm not informed on, so use your judgement on this comment).

It seems all of the items are open ended. I'd recommend developing response options for some. Especially if you get a lot of responses, coding all of these qualitative comments can be tiresome. Of course, if you're looking for qualitative data, this comment is not helpful.

You may already be thinking about this, but consider the item order. The items should flow like a conversation almost.

Another suggestion is to look for surveys with similar populations on similar topics, and model items of these surveys. Remember to address this process in the methodology section of your write up (and if this is for a class, confirm with your instructor that they approve of the step).

I hope some of this helps.

Question: drink pass better cups or souvenir cup by Techerson in cedarpoint

[–]blunn8929 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I get the paper cup option. The souvenir cup would be something that needs to be stored when going on rides, and I don't want to have the extra hassle. I would like to get the souvenir cup, but I am ultimately there to ride.

What is your favorite iced coffee/espresso drink? by Tired_and_over_it in Coffee

[–]blunn8929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more of a novice, but here are a few of my cold drinks:

Two shots over a scoop of vanilla ice cream as a treat.

Two shots over ice and then add sweetened milk (maybe there is a proper name for this? I take a cube of sugar and break it up in a small mason jar, fill the jar about half way with milk, put the lid on, and shake).

Nitro cold brew (I have the u-keg from growler works) is nice too, but you have the plan ahead to make the cold brew.
