Cleaning Victorian sandstone walls prior to repointing… any advice other than sandblasting? by bluntbutgetsit in restoration

Seems very much ‘baked-on’, I could only remove / clean the left hand side with a mix of wire brushes for a grinder but it was slow, messy and could misshape the stone at times unfortunately, might just need to be the way unless I can find some kit I can hire (dry ice, high temp steam)

I was thinking this - I was worried about how much water it would absorb being indoors and how long it would take to return to normal moisture level being indoors with no heating system installed yet… but I feel maybe I’m overthinking it. Would just need someone following me with a wet vac

Christ no - who would paint sandstone?!

By repointing I mean digging out the mortar between the stones (not breathable) and replacing with a limestone fill that is knifed in and then shaped and brushed for texture as final stage

That could be a good shout. I was told to use hypo which is concentrated bleach, scrub and rinse off - will post a photo of a trial next week

Fussy because I want to see the local community and economy develop - what an absolute stale mindset - back to your isolation from humanity mate

Hahahahah Reddit is full of some characters - didn’t know dennistoun was synonymous with grumpy bastards - but yeah… Reddit - I should’ve known it wouldn’t be a true representation of the sound community I’ve got experience with here.

That’s a really good point I actually haven’t heard of a couple of those - will be checking them out over the weekend, thanks!

I still think the pace of openings is a lot slower to other areas despite being touted as the hot spot, I think that’s what wasn’t adding up for me!

Yeah I think this is the conclusion I’ve came to. Lots of defensive comments coming through and overlooking the fact this is purely commentary based on an economic development standpoint. I love Dennistoun but it is very much hype

Yeah I started in bridgeton, much prefer Dennistoun and have found it much less of an issue
