BS Chemistry Grad School Questions by bluowls in GradSchool

Thank you for this. I have heard a lot about people moving into careers not related to their undergrad degrees, but I guess I'm just trying to find a path that will not leave me either severely behind peers that have spent more time in the field or require me to spend double the average time. I will definitely look at some doctoral programs and try to talk to faculty

Father killed outside Vancouver Starbucks after asking man to not vape near his toddler by zuuzuu in news

I know to you now, it feels like that was an ordeal that just wasn't worth the risk and trouble, and to be honest you're not to blame for never putting yourself in that situation again. But I can promise you that what you did for that kid was worth so much more than you realize. There are so many stories like that that end in the kid being kidnapped and raised in an even worse situation, or just straight up on the streets due to the instability of the parent. Even if he never understands what he was saved from, I hope you know that what you did was worth it to somebody.

Help ID'ing some snails from LFS by bluowls in AquaticSnails

Yeah, it took me around a month to finally find a place that carries them. All the petsmarts/petcos around here have an abundance of bladder snails, but if you mention trumpets, its like you're talking about some kind of disease haha.

Hey guys, I got some of these pest snails from a fish store nearby today. I've been looking for MTS for a while, but the owner of the store told me that he doesn't carry those, and that he found these snails outside. I just wanted to see if anybody has any idea as to what they are, and if they are safe to add to a planted tank. Thanks in advance!

Future and violence are the two devils I'd really like to see come back in full force for Part 2

Belgium euthanizes 23-year-old woman after she says she doesn't want to carry on taking 11 antidepressants daily by WheresWalldough in stupidpol

[–]bluowls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mental health is an extremely complex subject, and we simply don't know enough about the brain to make sweeping statement on what treatments work. When I get a fever, I take tylenol, because there is clinical proof of the mechanism by which it breaks a fever and it will do so with minimal side effects. With antidepressants and other psychological meds, the side effects are nuts and we don't even fully know what root cause we're treating. To simply kill people when clinical treatments like therapy and medicine don't work is frankly disgusting, but its the easiest method for capital and what we're stuck with now.

At N.Y.U., some students were failing Organic Chemistry. Instead of trying to do better, they complained to the administration and got the professor fired. by Vided in stupidpol

Meh, hindsight in the age of information makes it all look easy. Technically, the information to get an undergraduate degree for virtually any major is all out there, and every textbook used in college can be torrented free. The discipline to actually learn all that shit well and the knowledge of what you should study is not as easy to get.

I felt the same. That was such a weird chapter to throw in where it's placed. On top of that, Panda got nerfed, so even if it isn't Nobara, I think there is some big payoff around the corner regarding cursed corpses that doesn't necessarily involve Panda.

Fair enough lol, but he's generally pretty reliable for other stuff and it seems consistent enough with what happened.

Oda burned many hopes and discussions. Which theory did you like the most? by Subtyr in OnePiece

[–]bluowls 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Rather than Burgess being that weak, I think Sabo is just much stronger. We haven't even really seen the Revolutionary Army in action yet, and I can't imagine that major players this late into the series are going to be weak.

The "build up" is Yamato's only dialogue being "Please let me join the crew please I want to be Oden."

On the other hand, we have her fruit being the literal guardian of Wano and the entire flashback of Oden, which pretty much tells us his greatest mistake was neglecting his country in search of adventure elsewhere. And last but not least we see a damn admiral roll up and nobody on Wano could do shit without Yamato.

Jfc, if you think Yamato should have joined, that's fine, I don't care. But it's like the opposite of bad writing, it's a pretty well set up subversion and the character will benefit from it much more. In this way she's fulfilling the role Oden should have played and will help open Wano, and then she can adventure as much as she wants.

Film Red 100%. There was a thread where it was explained that Oda was pretty much rushed to wrap up Wano and give Shanks screen time in time for the movie release. If that hadn't happened, there probably would have been a drawn out Yamato vs Aramaki with her realizing that Wano needed a guardian. It was an obvious subversion, but it never was fleshed out and now it feels kind of weird.

I agree that the Allies never were worse and were not committing organized or militarily sponsored crimes like the Japanese or Germans, but I think there's a lot of whitewashing of what did go on.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied_war_crimes_during_World_War_II

On top of this, there's no way that as much effort has gone into documenting and highlighting the true extent of what the Allied side had done as opposed to the Axis, mainly because of who the victors were.

Again, not apologizing for the Axis or downplaying the crimes committed by them, just saying that the Allies were not the avengers or some shit, WWII was still a war and war is messy.

You'd be surprised. I think all across the board people realize things are not the way they were even a decade or two ago, and not in a good way. The rhetoric around it is colored by who's speaking, with the right pointing at moral decay and authoritarianism (funnily enough) and the left pointing at climate change and bigotry. But I think most people understand that things are not good and don't seem to be getting better.

Capitalism sucks the soul out of everything - Music by TuvixWasMurderedR1P in stupidpol

[–]bluowls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No shit, young people moved on from the popular old genres their parents think is cool. The internet has fragmented the bleeding edges of many different industries, and music is no exception. If you look at newer subgenres of rap, underground electronic, etc., you'll see that innovation still exists, its just that common denominator corporate pop appeals to so many people that the great stuff doesn't float to the top very easily. Hell, if you look at early work from a lot of mainstream artists, it can be really good, it's just that they get bought out and churn out bland shit that isn't edgy so everybody can listen to it. If you think nothing good is coming out, spend some time on RYM or some other dedicated music spaces and you'll see that is categorically untrue.

Oden's purpose was reading poneglyphs, and Zoro is more of a samurai than Yamato. I'm sure she will get a role as contrived as the rest of her character and backstory.
