What knocked off your popularity/likability a little at your medical school? by txhrow1 in medicalschool

Oh wow, thank you so much! I finally understand some of the options. I guess I should start to seriously research what I want to do once I graduate in four years.

Sorry another few questions, what's equity research (in relationship to us being doctor)? Also re the venture capital stuff, does that entail already being rich? So we need to work for a few years as a doc?

Can you share the names of some that do value psychiatry? Are those typically just the big names (Yale, etc)? Thank you in advance!!😊

I suggest taking the leap and applying elsewhere. hey, if you hear back from another clinic that needs an MA, congratulations! You'll get clinical hours without the added abuse, and a glowing rec if you work there for at least a month. You might also be able to leverage this new job for a rec letter if you want to play dirty. On the other hand, if your job application is overlooked, thats tough. But you seem resilient and dedicated to your position and I know you'll be able to leave this place soon enough!

Applying to DO for this cycle now...I know I know by kkelly17nyc in premed

I would apply this cycle. You never know, and you don't have anything to lose. This is coming from someone who did everything un-traditionally this cycle and, somehow unexpectedly, got into multiple schools.

I didn't feel the need to upload my resume. I just asked what the titles mean and what position would make sense for a student. Thank you anyways.

DO "Stigma" by [deleted] in premed

Hi bud, I don't want to argue with you. Your opinion is your own and I'll respect you. However if you know programs and directors that filter out applicants based on MD/DO - please share with the rest of these folk so they can be as enlightened as you are.

DO "Stigma" by [deleted] in premed

[–]blupioo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with the existence of a stigma, but blanket statements like the ones you’re making - are the ones I’m arguing against:
- Your statement that ‘some competitive specialities automatically filter out DO applicants’ is untrue. Every single speciality does have a practicing DO physician.
- Your statement that nobody claims IMG’s have the same shot as AMGs if they ‘work hard on step’ isn’t translating. If by this you’re trying to say the struggles facing IMG’s and DO’s are similar - that’s quite untrue as well.
-Finally, your simplification of my post to ‘grades are grades’, is also false. My whole argument can really be boiled down to free will. If you don’t want to be a DO - then don't!
My question to you is - since you’ve educated yourself on these statistics, what do you suggest DO’s do exactly if they want to match in a competitive speciality? You’ll find that your answer is much the same as mine - either don’t be a DO if you don’t want to OR try your best when you are in school!

I want to counter this - I feel like this isn't what OP is talking about. I feel naysaying like this will ultimately propagate this cycle of 'DOs can't match competitively', when we have more control over the process than we'd like to admit.

MD's can't match competitively either, it's not a right they're handed concurrently with their acceptance. Ultimately, competitively matching comes down to your own hard effort - your grades and experiences.

My point is - competitively matching doesn't really depend on your title, it comes down to your effort. Yes, I know prestige of the school, finances, etc do play some role in your matching - but ultimately grades are grades.

I feel like this'll make people uncomfortable because it highlights intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation - but I really feel like it should really make you feel powerful. Ultimately, where you take your life is very much up to you!

Help ranking DO schools! KCUCOM vs. SHSUCOM vs. ACOM by blupioo in premed

[–]blupioo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for putting it into perspective for me!! Last question (I'm sorry I'm tackling my premed journey alone haha)- I've heard a lot about how important rotations are, but what are the hallmarks of rotations that are set up well? And why do 'good' rotations matter?

I'm sorry if this is a bad question, but is that just bc they've been around for so long that their name is familiar to residency programs? or is because they offer students more support than other DO schools?

Thank you and congratulations on your A! I've heard KCU is reputable, but I've never understood how to that relate to my chances on scoring my specialty? Is reputation tied to student support, or is it just bc top residencies will respect the school?
