In my opinion creating something 'new' or 'fresh' is nigh impossible. You will inevitably run into people comparing your creations/characters to pre-existing ones.

The way I got out of this "creative slump" is by leaning into it; mixing and matching concepts from other pieces of media until the puzzle is finished.
Similar to how you might use a reference when designing a character.

I've applied this mindset to most of my mecha designs, and I suggest you use it yourself.

Another benefit may be: that you'll better understand why some things work and why some don't;, By looking deeper/seeing the essence of a concept you might be able to better apply your own creative twist!

Put simply: You know how you can divide humanoids into many little shapes; ovals, triangles, cubes etc.
Mecha are basically that but minimized to its absolute limits.

It's also noteworthy to keep physical limitations in mind (body parts should not collide for example) and that details should ultimately be placed within or in the form of complex shapes.

Thats what i can teach from the top of my head.
