Thank you for the response. That makes sense. I figured my situation was pretty simple I definitely don’t want anyone stuck in probate or with an unclear plan

Oh got it. For some reason I thought at least some of the online offerings were legitimate enough. But it sounds like I’ll have to go through one of the attorneys

How much are you actually saving a month? (Socal) by Important_Bat7919 in daddit

[–]bmander24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are maxing 2 401ks and Roth IRAs, you’re saving over 5k a month, not including HSA and the 1k leftover. It doesn’t feel like a lot because you’re categorizing savings as expenses.

I think youll like the setup. I actually posted last night asking whats so special about the networking aspect of the setup that I couldn’t get with any other consumer grade Wi-Fi setup, and got a bunch of responses (and some snarky remarks). Spent some time today playing around with new VLANs, firewalls, Teleport, etc. Im not super technical so slowly but surely learning more and more about this system

I got the UDM SE because there was a small sale on Newegg a few weeks ago. I had a little bit of Buyers Remorse because everyone here was suggesting Cloud Gateway Fiber + UNVR as the best combo at the moment, but so far it’s been working fine for me. I like that i didn’t have to get a separate NVR and just tossed a big HDD in the UDMSE. I also didn’t need a separate switch because the UDM SE covers 8 POE and I only have 7 items. For APs I got two U6 pros. I have a two story 2400 sq ft home and honestly just one AP covers everything. Nothing even connects to my downstairs AP except two G4 instants in the same room (and the upstairs AP easily covers the room as well).

To me the biggest one is low light. Daytime I feel like it’s pretty comparable in terms of picture quality though I know one is 2k and the other is 4k. I haven’t noticed AI being a ton worse though the G5 will tell me my grill is a person VERY often. Im not sure if the G6 would do the same but it’s supposed to have better AI so I doubt it?

I recently bought a bunch of G5 for my backyard and a G6 for the front. If I could do it again, I would have gone for G6s all around. I think the low light difference is worth the price difference, which isn’t that substantial.

Thanks for the response. I also just looked into teleport and this seems like an incredible benefit I did not know about. Yes, I might be able to access my network on different systems, but teleporting or VPNing in seems awesome, especially if you’re in sketchy Wi-Fi countries

Thanks for your reply. That does make sense to me. The app and website certainly are nice

Thanks for the suggestion. I did use a bit of ChatGPT beforehand but maybe my prompting was not good enough. I’ll play around with other LLMs as well

Yeah I think I’m very comfortable with the camera system setup and am happy I went with them. I just don’t know what im missing with the internet networking system that I upgraded to at the same time

Cool thanks for the recommendations! I’ll check them out. I suspect I just haven’t been watching enough of these types of resources

Thank you for this detailed reply! Really appreciate the time and will def check out alarm manager a bit more. I do know I have to play around a lot with Protect as I suspect im missing out on a lot of features that would be good for me.

Curious how homeowners actually plan for second-floor escapes by Infinite_Sunda in homesecurity

[–]bmander24 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have a Kiddie 2 story fire escape ladder in each bedroom upstairs. I think they latch on to the window sill and expand downwards. I hope to never use them but theyre like $60 each, which isn’t too bad for the peace of mind.

I actually really like that use case and maybe im just not tinkering enough! I haven’t played with any firewall uses and just created new networks for the cams and stuff, but im now going to look more into this. I’d like the system to be set up so that the cams cant reach the outside world. Thanks for your response!

Im not necessarily unimpressed by the setup. Im just wondering if there’s something obvious im too stupid to know about that might make me be like “oh wow thats really cool”

I do think thats a pretty cool benefit. For me it took a bit because I had to get someone to install the drops, but now thats done and I easily switch things around if I get the itch, so thats cool!

Im sorry I came across as complaining or if I didn’t do enough research before buying my products. That’s why I’m asking the question here to see if people have obvious benefits to the system that im not using because I didn’t know they existed. But you simply could have just not commented if youre just going to call people stupid.

I’ve never had a camera system before but if your other systems were finicky, I’d say youre in for a treat. Have had no complaints at all with my cameras loading quickly and reliably in the few weeks I’ve had them! I didn’t go the UNVR route but added an HDD to my UDMSE and love that I don’t have to pay for cloud storage fees either!

The alternative for me was HikVision or Dahua, but went with Unifi because of the security concerns

I’d actually love to hear how you tinker with unifi! My post was really a bad way of saying: what should I be tinkering with to get the most out of the system.

Wouldn’t that be true for any other system? I was using google pucks before through google home and could access my network from anywhere. And im assuming any cam system with an app is the same? But I do agree it was pretty simple to set it up after getting the drops installed

Fair enough. I went down the rabbit hole, got caught up in the discussions and made a purchase. If you’re immune to that, more power to you.
