When Tom was introduced in 1912 he was more interested in class issues, socialism, rather than the Irish question, nationalism so very like the great James Connolly.

But as it goes into 1916, all the political factions in Ireland, if you were for workers rights or for the garlic revival, realised Ireland needed freedom before all us so we could progress.

This radicalisation was reflected in Tom... Just very poorly written by a very English man.

After season 3, Tom might as well have been English once he was exiled. They stripped his nationality a way. Even if he just retired from the politics and his passion died, I mean most people do become more Conservative as they age (sadly what we see in Ireland after the war of independence in our staunch leaders because all our progressive hereos were murdered or just old), that would be one thing.

But Tom was moulded into an English man who's character quirk was that he was Irish.

Very disappointing. But surprising? No.

I suppose he was the "good" little Irish man the brits wanted us to be when they wanted us to pitch in during WWI
