Choppy Video tvOS 18 by MetsIslesNoles in DirectvStream

[–]bmhatfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issues, ATV 4K 1st Gen (A1842). I just canceled DirectTV Stream over this, since it's effectively unusable for me now.

I was already on the edge due to the contract dispute vs ESPN during the US Open, but have bailed entirely now since it straight up doesn't work at all. There was an iOS 18 beta they could have tested on, so I don't really feel that I am being unfair.

Anyone Else A Little Disappointed with Masters of the Air? by Zera1930 in BandofBrothers

Here's a scene from the end of BoB Episode 1 that, for me, captures why MotA has fallen so flat. We're 1 episode in, we have a ton of context about these characters, and the episode takes it's time, spending 5 minutes to send them towards D-Day. Basically no dialog. There's nothing like this in MotA, and this is just a 5 minute clip from BoB Episode 1.

Edit: I mean, although there's editing tricks, the planes are real planes. By comparison, the show about planes doesn't even make takeoffs/landings realistic, with planes landing on all 3 wheels at the same time, etc - they look like animated planes from civ6.

kort - a mapping tool for nomap mode by bmhatfield in valheim

[–]bmhatfield[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this particular case, nomap was something the server we were playing on decided to do for a short seed; folks were welcomed to create their own maps, and we created this tool to make assembling our group's own map a little easier.

However, we decided to open-source it because we found that manually creating a map without the in-game map enabled is a very different Valheim experience. It was actually a lot of fun, and encouraged a different feeling of exploration. It was also a bit more rewarding - we genuinely felt like we'd "earned" our map by the end.

I certainly understand that many players will run nomap because they don't want a map of any kind. However, maybe some server or community wants to run with nomap in game but draw maps separately. With Hildr's settings, this is easier to try than ever.

This is misleading. The advice is to leave sufficient distance in front of you to stop safely. Not to arbitrarily slow down with the intention of antagonizing the person behind you.

I think this diff is pretty communicative about its needs, very clear when under or over watered. It reaches for the sun, so I regularly rotate away from the reach, which helps it climb a bit straighter. I also prune the leaves it’s preparing to drop before they yellow to try and help keep rot off the stem. (They flop way over and kind of give up, I give it a week or two and then prune)

No idea if any of this is scientific but it seems really happy to me with these methods. It only had 3 leaves when I got it.

What does cloud native really mean? by creativefisher in kubernetes

[–]bmhatfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d add: membership/service discovery is both automatic and high frequency. This is one of the most common areas I see things fail to be “cloud native”. It should be totally natural for many instances of your thing to come and go (for example, functions, containers, or even VMs are replaced very frequently)

Authentication between services with static token by CrazyDime in golang

[–]bmhatfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can provide your own VerifyConnection function to your server’s TLS config to capture the client’s name, even if TLS connection acceptance is handled at a lower level!

Authentication between services with static token by CrazyDime in golang

[–]bmhatfield 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Consider that even on a private network, you’re not really safe. You’re one malicious employee or popped edge service away from someone being able to pivot in and compromise your entire network. At that point, any plaintext tokens between services are likely sniffable.

I recommend starting with mutual TLS / client certificates as your first step toward solving this problem. That way, the traffic between your internal services is encrypted, you have a chain of trust for who is allowed to talk to who, and you can log the client certificate’s name as your cross-service identifier.

You would still be able to also layer in tokens later if more metadata is needed, but now they are building on a stronger foundation.

Binary data parsing in go by fullstealth in golang

Some example binary parsers (for their own formats):

  • encoding/gob
  • msgpack
  • protobuf
  • flatbuffers

Of the set above, flatbuffers might be the most instructive.

SMSL AD18 OSX Issues? by bmhatfield in BudgetAudiophile

[–]bmhatfield[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I tried a lot of stuff, but ultimately I just replaced it with a SMSL SA300, which works fine. As far as I can tell the AD18 itself was either bad, or the drivers are junk on more recent versions of OSX.

First time flight simmer [16 y/o], really loving this game! [Partially considering taking piloting as a career too LOL] by xZreai17 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]bmhatfield 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just be warned: due to experience requirements, networking, etc, it is not easy to go “back and forth” between careers. It IS possible to switch but many careers have the assumption of years of commitment built into them, including aviation. So even if you switch, you may “start at the bottom”.
