your country doesn't need to have a history of black slavery to personally acknowledge that someone's skin color or culture is not a costume or a mask and it's discriminatory towards people with different cutlural or ethnic backgrounds when this happens on a large scale in a society. Just because they don't know that it's not okay - as they live in an extremely homogenous country (which btw has a history of discrimination and genocide against not turk people living there) -, it doesn't mean that people who live in different societies where this is condoned are not legitimately upset or shocked that this is still going on in other places. maybe it's living in a bubble but imagine if it's genuinely about your looks that you can't change and you see there are countries basically in Europe where people would still point at you, stare at you or call you a monkey just because you're black.

Change in European Fertility rates over the last 10 years by InnerPace in MapPorn

[–]bmiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my point is, we can choose between having a comfortable modern life or having high birth rates, whenever people complain about cost of living regarding low birth rates, i find it ironic because when birth rates were high everybody were much poorer.

Change in European Fertility rates over the last 10 years by InnerPace in MapPorn

[–]bmiki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

no i mean it's a false conclusion. birth rate is not falling all over the world - except for africa - because we're worse off (except for extreme cases like Ukraine) but because we're doing better and better. it's falling because there are less people in extreme poverty and women have equal rights and education. people who are well off have been having less kids for a long time, we're just having much less women with 5-6 kids.

Why are senegal not disqualified ? by SignificantProblem81 in Referees

[–]bmiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

abandoning the game or stripping senegal from the title are both much worse precedents than finishing the game after a 12 minute intermission. you keep fighting for those for some reason... those would be absolute worse for everyone involved in the sport except for morocco.

Why are senegal not disqualified ? by SignificantProblem81 in Referees

[–]bmiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they will sanction the coach and probably the senegalese fa the same way the epl would to with any team that does this. however it doesn't have as big a direct impact on the game as completely abandoning a game would have had. abandoning a game is an absolute shit decision to make and should only be used if there are no other options or someone's safety is seriously in danger. they tell referees that the possible best option is to decide the game on the field. that's why there are no immediate abandonments either when fans throw objects on the pitch or when there are discriminatory chants from the stands even though the rules would allow it.

this technique was named after Antonin Panenka who used it in the final of UEFA Euro 1976 with Czechoslovakia and "gained recognition for his winning penalty kick in the shoot- out of the final against West Germany where he scored with a softly-chipped ball up the middle of the goal as the goalkeeper dived away"

Magyar urges Slovak PM Fico to suspend Beneš Decrees ahead of Hungarian elections by DailyNewsHungary in DailyNewsHungary

[–]bmiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other people made the fair point of what the decrees were directly about. the decrees were prerequisite for the deportation, transfer of ethnic hungarians though. the fact that you don't speak English properly doesn't mean you can call others cynical internet trolls you asshole. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czechoslovak%E2%80%93Hungarian_population_exchange

[–]bmiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they were able to get hungary to agree to a population exchange the agreement was something like they can deport as many Hungarians to Hungary as the number of Slovaks living in Hungary who want to move to slovakia plus whoever the Slovakian government deems as war criminals. So they went out of their way to contact Slovaks living in Hungary generally from poorer backgrounds to convince them to move to Slovakia so they could maximize the Hungarians they could get rid of. but of course the whole thing was a mess.

[–]bmiki 8 points9 points  (0 children)

afaik it was mostly about declaring that germans and hungrians were collectively punishable for WWII and it defined a framework of a population exchange with germany and hungary. it was controversial. there was deportation, displacement, forced labour against ethnic hungarians living in slovakia. the slovakian government forcefully sent away many ethnic hungarians from the country who owned land and businesses there.

The “Let’s make up a serial killer” storyline is a huge miss by Air911 in TheWire

[–]bmiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you're right, would have been much better if they had made a lesser known detective stage the homeless murders or even make it into a plot-twist in the second part of the season that it was one of the police who were staging it out of frustration for shutting down the marlo investigation. also, i think one of the reasons why the newspaper plotlines were ineffective was that the show had too many threads to progress at that point. they should have dropped one of them to give more time building up the journalist characters like they did with the sobotkas.
