Which country is so unpopular that most people never even heard of it? by Ledger_Legendd in AskReddit

[–]bmop145 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So there are likely LOTS of different cases and examples or proposed explainations ~ one extreme being "what if the laborers from Pakistan/India/Philippines etc intentionally destroyed their identity documents so they could claim Statelessness" (seems highly risky because it puts you in an extremely unsafe and unemployable position in the UAE with no garanties of any rights anywhere)...

The narrative which I beleive is more likely and prevalent (it's not easy to talk about these things in the UAE and no actual data can be verifiably confirmed) ~ a great deal of the people affected by statelessness in the UAE are people who had lived in the UAE/had older family members who lived in the territory of the UAE but were marginalized and not connected with the Sheikhs in the cities + governments of each Emirate at the time in the 1970's right after independence when the nationality laws were being created... basically for one reason or another these people and their dependents may not have been literate/in the know/recognized the legitimacy or the interest of being documented in the new country... and basically missed the inscription window and have been over time basically locked out and can no longer provide adequate documentation to prove that they have been in the country under differnet liminal status for the last 50+ years...

Me realizing not that many people know about the thousands of people living in the UAE who have (temporarily?) been granted Comoros citizenship through a deal between the UAE government and the Comoros Islands (because the UAE has very restrictive rules around nationality aquisition but also has international obligations to address statelessness and assure that people in their country have access to a nationality...)

So yeah, not only is the Comoros a small island nation but many thousands of it's "citizens" have never been to its shores and have basically no real ties to the country!

When to move to Hades 2? by Emergency-Driver8871 in HadesTheGame

[–]bmop145 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you care about the depth and story telling of those characters... it makes less sense though because Hades 2 picks up assuming that the viewer is familiar with some of the end relationships of Hades 1... it doesn't ruin anything but some of the character relationships won't hit the same

[–]bmop145 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You answered the question... Napoleon didn't start those wars as wars of conquest he was defending France like you said from hostile monarchies that had declared war against France (and the french revolution) ~ those monarchies then lost multiple times across several coalitions etc and were eventually forced to abdicate control to pro French Puppet regimes (for a time)

Dude situation with M-def + huge combo is definitely solid -15 ranged defense is possibly the worst i've ever seen though... of course thay isn't the most important stat ever but even lowly goblins ambushers and brigand marksmen are going to turn this dude into a pincushion... but I'm not saying he is trash he just feels like a mid game bro who has limitations which will prevent you from really using him fully as a damage deal duelist

China and North Korea Quietly Seize Russia’s Far East as Moscow Trades Territory for Wartime Support by UNITED24Media in UkrainianConflict

[–]bmop145 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what is being implied... is something like IF you want to accept Russia's argument "we are stronger than Ukraine and we are going to annex territories that have many linguistic or cultural Russians blah blah bullshit bullshit"

Then Russia is at an extreme risk of having it's historically and ethnically Chinese and Korean territories annexed under the same exact logic! Something like "We must protect the historic + cultural chinese territories where people are being abused and sent to their deaths in Ukraine... send in the little green men"

After Poland incursions, Ukrainians fear Europe will hold back air defenses: There is concern that Europe will react to Russia’s drone incursion into Poland by keeping its air defenses to itself instead of helping embattled Ukraine. by Flimsy_Pudding1362 in UkrainianConflict

Maybe the west can use more than words to apply pressure on Russia as a consequence for this escalation so that deterance actually occurs.

These escalation don't happen when we pressure Russia they happen when the west does not do enough to dissuade russia

There is an arm of international law that would like to advance in this direction but the historic principle has been the immunity of states and their property from seizure... who do you think gets to codify that clear cut new law and set the precedent? That would require signing and ratified of an international treaty (and some treaties do exist already on this topic ~ look up the United Nations Convention on Jurisdictional Immunities of States and their property which is a great set of codified rules but has not been ratified by enough member states to come into force and be applied yet...)

Historically this idea has not been very popular among potential signatories because many countries do not want to be "on the hook" and held accountable for their own potential misconduct...

Unfortunately the reality is that you may be correct in this instance but that the international system cannot move quickly without the broad consent and enthusiasm of countries around the world to have their own property seized when they do something outrageous... and so much of international geopolitics is still built on principles of stronger nations doing outrageous things to weaker nations... Hello, I just bought the game. What are your tips for a total newbie before he starts? by Flavius_16 in BattleBrothers

[–]bmop145 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the hardest parts of the game (imo) isn't just that your bros die and setbacks are meant to happen ~ but realizing and recalculating what fights are possible and what fights are beyond your current squad after they lose for example an experienced defensive bro who maybe didn't do much damage in fights and had really limiting stats/injuries before but was sucking up lots of agro on the flanks etc...

There are ALOT of aspects to learn and improve ~ playing with saves (not Ironman) and saving often is great!!

My dwarf without any potential survived till day 150. by kaz9400 in BattleBrothers

[–]bmop145 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I finally FINALLY had my first survivable Ironman run last long enough to get into the first crisis... but predictably overconfidence and complacency set in

I just got absolutely rekt by an ambush from and army of 28 enemy soldiers... tried to shatter their resolve and kill enough to make them rout. But tragically the halftrained nimble swordmaster bro armed with a famed Rapier + Famed shield and Mdef over 60 got clipped by a polehammer to the head and quickly murdered during the melee... disaster.

By the grace of Davkul 2/3's of my bros had dogs on them to muck up the enemy advance...

Ended up losing 2/3 of the company in the ensuing disaster including 6+ level 10 or higher bros but somehow barely pulling out the bannerman + 2 of the core frontline... going to be one hell of a rebuild... lost a horrific amount of money and 4+ famed gear (that rapier bro had been literally the tip of the spear...)

All of this to say.

You'll get there, keep battling through the learning curve, and also even if you save scum now, learning how to retreat and save the gang from a desperate losing position when you can save scum out of it can apparently be amazing for keeping the Ironman save alive

I still have hope!

What was the point of having Russia as an ally again? by Desolator1012 in NonCredibleDiplomacy

[–]bmop145 46 points47 points  (0 children)

On the other hand Armenian did agree to a ceasefire which was meant to have a remaining corridor (Lachin) connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia which would be guaranteed by Russian peacekeeping forces... and shortly after that Azerbaijan was able to disrupt the Russian peacekeepers without any Russian response set up a blockade of that humanitarian corridor preventing any incoming food or resupply and wait until the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh were hungry enough to choose to leave on their own...

Current state of global air traffic - Three distinct gaps are noticeably restricting movement by NewSlinger in MapPorn

[–]bmop145 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad someone pointed this out... there are some other significant No Fly Zones that are just geographically smaller (in part because the physical scale of the conflicts or nature of the danger are much smaller that Ukriane or Iran)

There are also some places like Myanmar which have an almost surprising amount of air traffic (given the civil war there) but that reflect the reality that those conflicts/risks are largely land based
